Question:
I am 3 weeks post-op and I have already started to introduce solid foods to my diet,
I have tried eggs, eggbeaters, tuna, chicken in the can, a cheeseburgerand i have tolerated all of it. I was hoping that i could get some easy recipes to introduce other foods to my diet. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. — angelswings711 (posted on July 23, 2006)

My suggestion is to STOP!! What do you think you are doing to your new
stomach. I was still on pureed/soft food at that time and did not want to
do ANYTHING to damage all the work that my doctor had done. I guess what
got me in your message is the fact that you ate a cheeseburger already! The
eggs and meat are okay if soft/moist. Have you talked to your doctor about
this. This is what I was allowed to eat at 2-6 weeks along with the items
from the liquid diet I was on the first 2 weeks- PUREED/SOFT DIET (2-6
WEEKS)
Dairy Products:
Low Fat Cottage Cheese, Non-Fat Cheese, Low Fat Yogurt
Soups
Black Bean Soup, Split Pea Soup, Lentil Soup, Egg Drop Soup
Low Fat Cream Soups
Vegetables
All Soft Mashed Vegetables
Meats(Moist):
Chicken, Turkey, Fish, Baby Meats
Desserts
Canned Fruits(Seedless & Skinless), Custard, Puddings
Hope this helps and sorry if I came across strong I just don't want you to
hurt your self. This is a learning process we all go through so good luck
and God Bless.

Kinda depends what your doc recommends . . . I was on *CLEAR LIQUIDS* plus
protein shakes made with water for 4 weeks.
However, some docs won't release from hospital until food goes down.
I hope that you're doing protein shakes . . .

Why are you rushing everything. You are going to mess the new stomach up
and going to be very very sick. Is your surgeon aware of what your doing?
I just got where I can eat hamburgers and tuna and I'm 5 months post op.
You are suppose to be on a semi solid diet like puddings, soups and stuff
like that. I hope nothing happens to you. You realise your stomach is
only 2 oz and if you eat like that solid stuff the incision will not heal
correctly and could possibly leak. plus your taking the chance of
increasing the size of your pouch way way to soon post op.

*IF* your doctor has said you can start eating more solid foods then he
should have given you a chart on what you can and can't have.
Now, mind you, I had pizza my 3rd week when I was on pureed foods because I
put it in the food processor and ground it up. If you are grinding things,
then yeah, I'm sure it's not hurting you but you should be still on fairly
soft stuff at this point.
Here's my fave recipe right now...
Ricotta cheese in a bowl with a tsp of spagheti sauce. Microwave until warm
and its like a mini lasagna without the noodles.
I'm 6 weeks out and am barely eating solids and when I do, it's Chew Chew
Chew or I feel miserable after.
I'd talk to your doctor to be safe as to what to eat though.

One of my favorite post-op foods was chili. You can make it with turkey
for additional protein/less fat, and you can puree it to make it easier to
go down. Unlike a lot of other foods, pureeing it doesn't make it
disgusting or change the texture till it's unrecognizable. I also had no
problem with eating it without purreeing it. Another favorite was refried
beans with a little cheddar on it - also a good natural soft food.

My surgeon required a complete psych exam to make sure I was prepared for
the end of my love affair with food. You are not, you are headed in the
wrong direction. Stop what you are doing and contact a nutritionist and a
local support group, you need further assistance with this ohter than this
website.

For me at 3 wks i was able to eat eggs, eggbeaters, tuna, chicken in the
can. But i introduced them slowly back into my diet. And those things are
fine to eat i would just suggest taking things very slowly don't be in such
a rush to add things to your diet right away. I havent even tried tuna or
chicken yet. I'm 5 wks out and this saturday was the first time i had any
meat at all. It was a very small piece of sandwich turkey meat. I would
have to agree with everyone else that a chesseburger at this stage is a no
no. I was told that ground beef would be one of the last meats i would add
to my diet. I know it's hard because at 3 wks i was tired of all the
pudding, cottage cheese and cream of wheat etc.. that i was eating
everyday. Maybe try some mashed Potatoes, refried beans maybe some oatmeal.
Good Luck!

I'm sure the responses of all of us who are being SO careful with our
"new" stomachs surprised you! But, it does sound like you
weren't given much guidance by your surgeon and his staff! Hmmmm I'm just
3wks. PO and I'm STILL on just liquids with my protein drinks and will be
for another 2wks. before I get the ok, AFTER my surgeon checks me, to begin
"soft" foods...you don't want to go back to "before"!
Be careful!
There are some great books with receipes and suggestions available...may I
suggest "Life After Bypass Surgery"?!?
I'm craving split pea soup and mashed potatoes....Good Luck and don't give
up!!!

It sounds like each aznd every doctor has a different approach. My doctor
has encouraged me to begin "soft" foods and I am not even two
weeks out yet. I have tried scrambled eggs, yogurts, low fat string cheese
and tuna from a can mixed with low fat mayo. My surgeon, and the
nutritionist, suggested all of these foods. I have tolderated everything
fine but now you guys are scaring me!!!
