Question:
Wondering how many feel cold after surgery?

Hi All- I am still in the insurance approval stage for a lap RNY (hopefully I'll get it in June/July) but my husband had a RNY around 2 years ago. He gets terribly cold, even 2 years out. I am wondering if this is a problem for many? He now has to sleep with 2 comforters and wears long sleeves, even when it is warm outside. I am kindof wondering if I will have the same problem. Does this happen to a lot of people? Thanks so much!    — amysocko (posted on April 18, 2006)

I haven't had surgery yet but from what I've heard from people on my yahoo group, the answer is yes. There is one lady that gets cold to the bone and takes hours to warm up, hot showers, several comforters, hot tea, nothing helps her.

Ihad surgery 6 months ago - and was terribly cold this winter - and dry skin too. i bought a new car with heated seats and they are wonderful. i asked my doctor about it and she said i had lost my padding. i have lost over 94lbs - so its not keeping me as warm as before. good luck with your WLS!

I have been cold pretty much since the day I left the hospital just over 3 years ago. Its really weird. Everyone else is warm and I'm freezing. Although, I will put up with it to be thinner and healthier. Good luck.

Wow . . . I'm glad to know that I am not the only one. I had my Lap RNY on 01/31/06 and ever since I have been so cold. Sometimes I can never get warm enough.

I do. I was told is was because we dont have as much fat to keep up warm.

Freezing after WLS is more than losing your body fat. It has to do with the amount of glycogen in the body. Because we are not eating like we use to and not taking in a lot of calories, the body is not storing glycogen in the muscles, this glycogen is used for quick energy and also use to keep the body warm. Low glycogen = freezing. At least, that what my doctor and nutrionist explained.

Hi..I know that I am constantly freezing. All the time and I am a little over 3 years out. It has been like this since I left the hospital but it's well worth it.

I have also found that I'm colder when dehydrated. Try drinking more *water*.

I am only having surgery next week but our support group was talking about that last week and the what we found is the patients that are taking the iron tablet are still getting very cold, but the patients that take the chewable passion fruit tasting iron don't. But it is definately linked to iron. Hope it helps.

We get cold because we're not ingesting carbohydrates like we used to, whose energy made us feel warm. It certainly is strange to feel so drastically different!

Hi. I had surgery two years ago. I am always cold. We live in the desert in California, and seem to only warm during the summer months when it's in the 100's. I feel as though it's from when I was big, I was pretty much insulated. Now, I am half the weight I used to be and don't have the layering keeping me warm. I used to bag on my wife for always being cold. Now, it's the other way around. I can live with the extra clothes though when we go places, because now I can go places more often.

Oh my word!!! I am so glad somebody posted this. Before the surgery, I had to keep my air conditioner at 68 all day long. I live in Florida. I was always hot. Now, my husband cannot understand why I am now so cold and have to keep the air on 75 and I have to sleep with my comforter. Thank you so much for clarifying this. Now I know there is nothing wrong with me. :)

This is a very common problem and, from what i understand, because i have asked as i get cold constantly, is that its not from the surgery itself but the loss of body fat that we are use to. Losing 100 lbs tends to leave you with less "blubber" or warmpth assistance in your metabolism. To me, its a small price to pay, hope this helps, Kim

I'd much rather be cold than hot an sweaty all the time, Its nice now to be able walk into places and not be all yucky feeling and have my clothes all sweaty. I can always put a sweater on now. Before what could I do in someplace like my office where I was so hot and everyone else was OK, I couldn't crank up the AC and freeze them out because I was so fat. It wasn't their fault or it wouldn't have been fair

Well, I was actually looking forward to this side effect of surgery and unfortunately it hasn't hit me yet. With all these posters agreeing I wonder if there are any out there who do not feel cold all the time like me? Or am I just odd? LOL

I am 2 months out -230 down to 175 pounds - and I am never cold. I wonder why? I do use the passion fruit chewable iron like the poster earlier mentioned...LOL.

Hello I'm not sure what all it is from but I think low blood count does it also I know even when I was heavy 260ps I still froze then and still do not that I do not have no more fat.So the fat thing about keeping ppl warm is not true with all ppl.It just goes to show we are all different. Right aftermy WLS an any operations I have had after that I burn up was sweatting and had to have fan on me while still in hosp. Take Care huggggssss Beth 4-16-03-260 4-16-06-135
