Hi Nickie -- Good job on getting all the information! Know your choices.
The DS or Duodenal Switch has some similarities to the RNY and some
differences. It is restrictive & malabsorptive, like the RNY.
However, it leaves the stomach larger and more normally functioning
(pyloric valve intact). Fairly quickly after surgery you can eat
'normally'. The higher level of malaopsorptive is what keeps the weight
off. It's also what makes it more challenging to deal with 'intestinal
issues'. One of the best things is that DS patients tend to lose 80-90% of
their excess weight and have very little 'bounce back' weight. Get the
facts. You should visit the Duodenal Switch Forum on OH and
www.duodenalswitch.com to get more information on the DS.

Distal RnY can provide as much malabsorption as DS. I know people with
Distal RnY who have common channels of 19", 40" and 50".
I am a 60"er, myself. True distal measure common channel length - the
leg of the Y, as oppesd to length of arms.
With Distal RnY, we get malabsorption, plus greater restriction, no
digestion. Need more supplements, including protein shakes.
