Question:
Ferritin dropping FAST after IV Infusion!

I had a ferritin of 10 before my infusion. (1,200 mgs of InFeD) After five weeks it went up to Ferritin 248.6 After another four weeks it has dropped to 126.3. It is within the normal range (13-150), but of course I am very concerned. It is dropping so fast. I do feel so much better since the infusion. I had some other numbers that were low: RBC 3.93 HCT 35.7 MPV 6.8 My B12 was fine at 915. My PLT CNT was 357. I don't see my doctor until November. I am actually seeking a new PCP. He is not much help. I would appreciate your help. Thanks Rita Open RNY Proximal -185lbs 3 1/2 years post op    — Allison M. (posted on October 21, 2005)

Hi Rita, THis is not an answer just a nod and offer of support. I too am 3 yrs post op RNY, and went anemic and needed an infusion, received Jan 05. However I had a check appt. earlier this month and my levels are still doing great. Hematologist said I just was not absorbing the pill form of Iron.

I never needed a IV iron infusion, but my levels were out of wack also, 2.5 years post op. It had gradually declined over time, and my pcp said it was of course because of malabsorbtion, and my monthly cycle. Besides having an abnormal pap, I opted for a total hysterectomy to reduse the amount of bloodloss. She put me on Rx Trinsicon, this has the intrensic factor we lack, and my zinc was also low which is a form of iron, and I ws put on Rx zinc 220, Im glad to say my levels are rising and getting stronger. I feel so much better and not so fatigued or run down. good luck to you and see about getting an Rx for these iron supppliments, slow stools are the only draw back but I can handle that. My hematologist had a different approach to infusions. I had daily small dose infusions for 32 days. All of my levels were within normal range within the month and stayed that way for well over a year. In August I had a week of "booster" infusions before my levels dropped too low after plastic surgery. Everything is back on track.
