Question:
I have a delima about my 1st year wedding aniversary/vacation as to whether to go bef
My date is set for July 11th, and I just don't know whether I should plan our vacation before or after the surgery. If anyone has any advice, I would really appreciate your thoughts and advice. I'm having s LAP/RNY, if that's any help, and I thought maybe if I plan to go in late August, I might be ok???? I just don't know....Thanks — Carol D. (posted on May 18, 2002)

I had my surgery last July (open RNY) and traveled 1000 miles home to see
my parents at about 3 weeks out. I did ok, but didnt really feel like
doing too much. I was still adjusting to all of the changes in eating and
the emotions involved. I also had multiple kidney stones (common after
WLS). Usually the lap surgeries are much easier on the person, but there
are other things to consider. I also had pretty frequent nausea for the
first month or so. So after my experience, I would personally suggest that
you go beforehand or wait until a little further out. You may do just fine
and not have any of the side effects that I did, but it would be awful to
have your vacation ruined because of all this. Best of luck to you!!

I'm 2 weeks post op and I know for a fact that I would not enjoy a vacation
right now. My friends (also post op) didn't get full energy for about 2
months! I really think that you'll need to be home during recovery. Plan
before your sugery. Good luck.

vacation right now.

What a good question....I had open rny July 2001. Our vacation was the
first two weeks in September. On the outside, I felt fine. We flew from
Kansas to San Diego and drove to central California. All that was fine. I
drank plenty of water, etc. The PROBLEM for me was the food. I hadn't
figured out yet what I could eat and what I couldn't. I took protein shake
powder, so that was okay. But every time I tried to eat, I got sick. I
remember driving through a national forest with a plastic bag to throw up
in!! Plus, I was pretty moody. If I had to do it over again, I'm not sure
I wouldn't go -- I would just maybe work more ahead of time on making sure
I was ready to take food with me that I KNEW I could eat instead of trying
to make do at restaurants. Good luck to you. Open RNY 7/17/01, -97, 40 to
go.

I didn't feel myself until about 3 months post-op. I had a minor
complication and was very fatigued for a while. Moody also. And food will
definitely be an issue for you. I'd advise you to keep things simple for
your one-year and plan something dramatic for your one year wls and two
year wedding anniversary. If you just can't wait, maybe something around
Christmas? Good luck...
