Question:
Does it really get better after surgery?

I am two and 1/2 weeks post op rny with gastrectomy. I am having the hardest time judging the amount of food I can actually eat. I end up with the foamies and am miserable. I guess I am having a hard time adjusting. I had lap band last june which was removed 2 1/2 weeks ago and thought I was better prepared. I lost 12 lbs the first week. I find it hard to believe that I will ever be able to eat semi-normally again. I am kinda depressed when I read what others are eating for dinner on the site and don't think it will ever be possible. How long before it starts to get better? It seems somedays are worse than others.    — pamela P. (posted on May 16, 2009)

Hi Pam, YES, it does get better!! Are you eating what the DR & nut told you to eat? I know that to much sugar with give the foamies..as will eating to soon and not chewing well enough. Slow, soft or lig as you are allowed. I know that sugar free has become my freind..Jell-o,pudding, fudge & pop sicles. Are you getting all your water and protein in?

It really does get easier and BETTER! The first 8 weeks I ate only 2 T protein 1T Fruit and 1 T starch or grain...As time went on the portion got bigger...and eating bevcame easier...There is no rush to eat like a normal person...You have no hunger and a lot of restriction...Take advantage of this time to lose weight and let it progress on it's own...Slowly. I remember mourning food and wanting to eat and chew my own food rather than puree it. It passes and slowly you do begin to eat just like a baby goes thru the phases of baby food in stages...You will eventually eat again. Slow it down and just get in that protien and water and this will all be a memory in a year! :) Only you'll be much smaller...Good luck

Pamela, I sooo remember feeling exactly like you are feeling right now. I was convinced I would never be able to eat anything normally again. It WILL get easier and will become normal for you. Right now you are mourning food too and that really makes it hard. You are normal and this will pass.

It does get better. I noticed a difference around 6 weeks. Stick to what the doctor and nutritionist told you to eat.You will only be able to eat a couple of tablespoons at each meal and make them count. Stick to protein-if you are on pureed-beans,chicken with broth, chili, gound beef if you can tolerate it(some people have a hard time with beef). You need to get your protein requirement in so you don't have room for anything else. It will get better as time goes on.Good Luck. Hang in there.

Yes it does get better. I have lost 110 pounds since last August. Here is the key! Exercise, drink your fluids, count your calories, write down everything you eat. Relax...it will all be worth it. Good luck!
