Question:
vitamin d
Hi l had the lap band on July 24,2008. I have no energy. I went to my thyroid dr. I thought my throid level was low. It was fine. They said my vitamin d was down it was 12 and it should be between 40-100. Have anyone had low vitamin d? — JANIECEMOM (posted on December 2, 2008)

This did not happen to me personally, but, my sister-in-law discovered this
during her pre-op testing with her RNY 2 weeks ago. Her surgeon put her on
massive doses of Vitamin D by mouth and encouraged her to get some natural
sunlight every day.

Julie, My daughter did not have wls, however she was always tired, jittery,
no engery and panic attacks. She had lab work done and the only thing that
was wrong was her vitamin D level.. Our doctor said the level should be
about 50-60 and hers was 18. So they did put her on a weekly vitamin D
pill. Hope this helps your question.

Vitamin D issues are abundant in the US population. Over half are either
deficient or extremely low in D. I had this issue too. Prescription D is D2
and not absorbed well. I had an 8 on my labs after surgery. I tried script
D 3 times and only got to 14. Went on liquid vitamins, 600 IU daily as my
only D (powdered calcium I used back then had NO D in it), and my D levels
increased to 33. This saga is noted on my profile story. I now augment my
diet with 3 of the 5000 IU from Vitalady. Just got 6 bottles of 250
capsules of the 5000 IU, and with shipping cost was just under $60. Take
some more D, preferably D3. DAVE

D deficiency will do that to you. It is also known to cause joint pain. I
never had blood work done to find out but I did lack in energy and had pain
in my joints. I started taking D-3 400 IU tablets, once a day and I don't
feel as run down as I did before and my joint pain has greatly diminished.

I had low vit D during my pre labs for surgery (almost two years ago) -
took vit D everyday for months. Got back to norm. Had 8 month blood work
done and it was low again. Now, I just take it daily with my calcium (they
work together to help absorb, etc.) and make sure I have my vit D under
control. It's just part of my daily vitamin routine. I make sure my
multi-vit has a lot of D as well and I get out in the natural sunlight
whenever possible (with sunscreen of course) but the warm sun on your face
is the best medicine (for me). Good luck.

Yep...it's an epidemic in the US...With all the sun screens and antacids
(blocking acid in the belly stops absorption of calcium and Vit D) You had
lapband so you still have a fully operational stomach...and YOU have a D
def...So for whatever reason you need to start taking more calcium and
D...If I were you, I'd take calcium citrate incase you have low stomach
acid for whatever reason along with Vit D3 ....If you are not calcium
deficient now...You will be because calcium cannot be absorbed without Vit
D....Fact! My Vit D was 38 and while 40 is the OLD normal...It should
actually be higher than 40 and closer to 100. You don't want to be on the
low end of even normal...and you are waaaaay low!...After taking 50,000iu's
of Vitalady's Dry D3 for 6 months...My Vit D is now 98 and I cut back the
dose to 5000iu's now and am doing great! Vit D defs lead to broken bones
and fractures, crumbing teeth...etc! People who have hip fractures tend to
die within 10 years...and often this is a case of Vit D def and ultimately
bone loss! You might want to go in and request a dexa scan or other bone
density test and GET ON D.

Julia,
Since WLS everytime I go my vitamin D is low. So I purchased a separate
bottle of Vitamin D -- I don't believe that within the multi-vitamin is
enough and I'll take additional Vitamin D every 2-3 days. If they say it's
low then sometimes the doc will prescribe a higher dosage of Vitamin D that
you take once a day for 12 weeks.

Hi! I am scheduled for RNY on December 30th. My pre-op bloodwork came
back low in Vitamin D (don't know the number) I got a phone call to take
Caltrate D twice a day. Learning a lot about all of these vitamins and my
journey has only just begun. Thanks to all for your input and
encouragement. This site is great!

I have not yet had WLS but was recently diagnosed with Vitamin D
deficiency. My count was 10! I had allover pain and joint pain. The
doctor put me on a megadose once a week for 8 weeks and daily supplement of
Calcium with Vitamin D (I have to take three of the 500s every day). I
just had my recheck yesterday and haven't heard what my count is now, but I
feel much, much better and the allover pain has pretty much gone away, the
joint pain is better and chronic headaches are even better. I read that
Vitamin D deficiency makes you twice as likely to have cardiovascular
disease. I do not get in the sun much because melanoma runs in my family,
so will mostly have to rely on the supplements.
