Question:

How much sugar could you eat before you ran into problems? — Rhonda C. (posted on September 5, 2008)

Hi Ronda,
What kind of surg did you have? Didnt your Dr. and NUT explain to you
about not having sugar? Were you given a diet to follow when you came home
and for the weeks, months to follow? You need to get your advise from the
Dr. that did your surg. We have all had a surg done, but with as many Drs
as there is there are also different beliefs on eating. I am 2 months out
and no desire to eat sugar or anything else that will make my new tool NOT
work correctly. I wish you well.

Did your nut not give u directions for the first 2 weeks, and the next two
week, and so on?
Just curious, cuz they gave me so much info and it was all written down.
The first couple weeks is important since you're still swollen from surgery
and I believe you're just supposed to have liquids...or ultra pureed
stuff...lots of protein shakes.
If they didn't give u directions, I'd give them a call...as u should do
what they tell u, not what someone like me from this board tells u.
Good luck.

I agree you should call your doctor or nut. I am having some problems with
the nut in doctor's office getting important about diet issues. These
people are getting paid to help take care of us during the aftercare of
wls. Call and keep calling until you get the right answers, because sugar
is something you need to be careful with. Ask for your food menu, this is
not the time to guess your diet. It is upsetting when I read this kind of
question because I know what happen to me early out from the hospital. God
bless.

First of all, if you just had surgery, most likely you're not EATING
anything, you're probably drinking. I assume you're asking so you don't
drink too much as protein shakes can be very confusing, and not that you're
trying to figure out how far you can push it with the sugar. Keep it under
10 gms per serving and you should be ok. Some people can't handle this
much, however, and some people get sick on sugar alcohols as well. But,
you should call your doctor or nutritionist to get their opinions, as they
should have given you this information before. Congratulations on your
surgery and welcome to a whole new way of life.

Hi Rhonda!
The best way to deal with the sugar is DONT! The longer you can stay away
the better. However if your sweet tooth is getting to you, there are great
Splenda recipes out there. I honestly can't tell the difference and neither
can family if I don't tell them. I think I have a few recipes on my profile
if you want to check it out, if not email me and I will send you some.

I had my RNY on July 2nd. Honestly, sugar is something best for anyone to
limit or avoid, not just for GB people. That said, everyone is different
in their tolerance level. I ate a couple of bite of apple cobbler two days
after the surgery and had no effect from it. I have never had a problem
with it, except when my blood sugar dropped to 38 and I ate a peanut butter
and jelly sandwich, heavy on the jelly. That gave me my ONLY time of
dumping syndrome. I use Splenda and do quite well, and though I can
tolerate sugar, I don't because it's just not good for me, and not really
for anyone. Lots of sugar-free items out there that are delicious. Good
luck and do follow the NUT guidelines and do some research for yourself as
well. There's a world of info on the internet. Inform yourself and you'll
have intelligent questions to ask the NUT.

I have avoided sugar as much as possible. soemthings have a little in
it...but nothing much...less than 7grams...and 7 grams is in a serving
...and we can't eat a serving early on..Not even now--I am 11 weeks out
eating 1 oz for a meal still....I heated up 1/2 can of v-8 juice. put
garlic powder and blk pepper in it...made it seem like 'food" did the
same for broth...I ate mashed taters, scram eggs, tuna, soft chicken...etc
hope this helps! hugs, Kim
