Question:
Sleepiness and nausea 5 months post revision to RNY
Before my RNY, when I had my stomach stapled and weighed 308, I was soooo tired and weak-feeling, and felt "heavy" and had joint pain. The stomach stapling caused me to have stomach cramps, and frequent re-gurgitation of food, or outright vomiting. Bad adid refulx as well. Now that I have revised to RNY, the acid reflux is gone, the vomiting and re-gurgitation and cramping are gone. Tiredness/weakness/joint pain gone......... but now, 5 months post-op, I am sooooooooooo sleepy during the day. I am fighting at 5:00pm trying to stay awake, I want to go to bed! Also in the morning, sleepy around 9 - 10 am. Weird. I am thinking maybe it's my body trying to adjust to less food and major changes that I have undergone? I also have frequent mild nausea. I am eating good foods, no sugar, mostly proteins, etc. vitamins, etc. but just seem to get frequent mild nausea (not vomiting). Am wondering, is anyone else experiencing extreme sleepiness and/or mild nausea post op? Thanks — Gina S. (posted on June 27, 2008)

CAn't answer your question but can offer a suggestion. When you feel
nausea come on, put an alcohol swap (the ones used to clean skin before
taking blood or doing a blood sugar prick) under your nose. The nausea
goes away quickly. The nurses taught me that after surgery when I was
nauseated and gaging strongly from anesthesia. They are inexpensive at the
pharmacy, or get a bottle of alcohol and use a cotton swab. Hope this
helps one of your problems. Lyn Anders

Could you possibly be pregnant?

Hi, there!
I had the same thing happen. I figured out that it wasn't that I wasn't
ingesting enough vitamins and protein, I was taking some that wasn't enough
of what my body needed.
If you want to know more about what I take, you can go to my website,

Hope that helps!

You didn't mention taking iron. Could you be anemic?

kick up your protien and make sure you get enough iron and B vitamins. When
I get real tired- I know I need another shot. I do a shot of cynob. every
week. Some people need more than others. How are you sleeping at night? Are
you getting a good night sleep? I get sleepy and naus. if any of the above
goes on or I try to eat something with too much sugar in it. I am 3 years
out. Good luck.

Another suggestion is to see a nutritionist. He or she could assist you set
up a diet that would give you the right amount of calories and protein to
keep you from feeling lethargic. The nutritionist could also help you
identify foods that make you feel nauseous. Once identified, you could then
avoid them. With the nutritioist's help, you could MAXIMIZE your weight
loss. He or she can assist you by creating a diet customized for you to
lose your MAXIMUM amount of weight possible. This would be done by
calculating where your body's metabolism set point is, and setting your
caloric intake just above that. If you go BELOW it, your body HOLDS ON TO
IT'S FAT and ROBS YOU OF IT'S OWN MUSCLE! You do NOT want this to happen!
The body takes protein (muscle) INDISCRIMINATELY! It will take it from your
HEART as soon as it does your LEG! My nutritionist has me eating 5 or 6
small meals a day. I get about 20 grams of protein and 20 to 40 grams of
carbohydrates at each meal. I suspect that with a SIMILAR program, you
would not HAVE the same issues with fatigue that you have now. Now, I would
not suggest that you try doing what I do without FIRST consulting with a
nutritionist of your OWN. Each person is DIFFERENT. Each person's NEEDS are
going to be DIFFERENT. I am a 6' 3" tall MALE. I do not know Who you
are, But I suspect that you are a FEMALE. I also suspect that you are NOT
as tall as I am. Your body will have different caloric requirements than
MINE. If you TRY to use my diet, you are likely to be VERY DISSAPONTED with
the results! I have lost 78 POUNDS in the nearly 4 months that I have had
my Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. Had I been a WOMAN on the SAME DIET, I
would likely NOT have lost NEARLY as much. I hope this helps, Hugh

Are you pregnant? When is the last time you had your labs checked? Your
iron could be low, even though you are taking your vitamins... could be
anemic and could explain the tired feeling. Call your doc and check it
out.

HI THERE.
I am having the same problem as you are with tiredness.I had my
RNY on April 30 , and could also go to bed at 6;00 . I have very little
energy . I really notice it when I walk up the stairs , my legs feel like
they will not make it up another step . I am very happy with the weight I
have lost ( 37 lbs ) but still don't have any energy.
