Question:
TROUBLE GETTING ENOUGH PROTEIN IN
I am 8 weeks out from RNY and I am having trouble getting 60 grams of protein in each day. What happens to the body when you are not getting enough protein? — CROJAS (posted on May 28, 2008)

Try a shake like www.unjury.com. You eventually will lose hair when you
shower and it makes you weak. You will start getting tired. Try dairy, low
fat solid chease is a good snack, yougard, low fat of course, yourgart
smoothies, Dannon make a low fat and low sugar one. Try cottage chease,
fish, green beans, soy beans, lima beans, they all help. You will be
surprised. I always used my evening as a snack time, and made it mainly
protein to get my 65 grams. Now I can do it in three meals without a night
snack. As you go you find out you can eat an ounce more at a meal and soon
you are eating two extra ounces. Best of success to you!

You can start losing your hair....you can start feeling tired.....there is
a Liuid Protein that comes in a plastic Capsule at the Vitamine Shopp.
It's called New Whey Liquid Protein....it comes in several different
flavors ( fruit ) and has 42 grams of protein per vial....you can actually
drink the whole thing in three or four swallows......If it is too strong
for you ...you can mix it wiot crystal light......you might try this until
you caan get your protein thru eating solid foods.....Be ssure and tell
theem you want to pay the on line price and not the store price...

You'll loose muscle mass, meaning you'll get tired and weak. You'll be
prone to infections. Drink several proteiin drinks daily, at least 3. Have
25-30 grams maximum per drink. Try to only use around 4-6 oz of water or
nonfat milk per shake. DAVE

Your body needs a certain amount of protein in your diet to function
properly. If it doesn't get it, it will start taking it from your own
MUSCLES. ONE of the muscles in your body is your HEART. Your body does
not discriminate from WHICH muscle it TAKES the protein from. Part of the
problem with protein starvation is that when you lose muscle mass, it
becomes even MORE difficult to lose FAT. Your body will take muscle BEFORE
it takes FAT. You have to PREVENT this by getting enough PROTEIN in your
diet to BUILD muscle and INCREASE your ability to BURN fat and thus LOSE
FAT! The government's MINIMUM daily requirement is just that, a MINIMUM.
It is NOT the OPTIMUM daily requirement. Your best course of action is to
see a nutritionist if you have not already done so (it sounds like you
already have but it is better to be safe than sorry and suggest that you
do) and see what he or she suggests for you as a diet. A nutritionist can
tailor a diet specifically to your dietary needs and tastes. Mine
suggested 5 or 6 small meals a day with something like 15 to 20 grams of
protein and 20 to 40 grams of carbohydrates per "meal." This is
the optimal way for ME to lose weight. I do not suggest the SAME for you
since YOUR needs may be different.
I hope this helps,
Hugh

First the protein has nothing to do with losing your hair. its going to
hapeen anyway. Eat fish, drink the special K flavored water it isnt bad as
long as it is really cold. Drink carnation sugar free instant breakfast
also not bad. I liked it frozen too. You can eat it while watching tv.
Peanut butter. Cheese. Eggs, yogurt chicken bacon red meats if you can eat
them. Cottage cheese.

Hey Cind - 8 weeks Out - Great Job ! - My biggest problem with protein was
weakness - I started using the Atkins Shakes (chocolate)- which taste MUCH
better than standard protein supplements

Wow, I'm glad I read this, the heart part, never thought about that. I had
surgery in November and have lost 95 lbs and stopped taking my vitamins
like the second month and never get in all my fluids or protein. My hair
hasn't fallen out, in fact, it's grown. But I guess I'd better do what I'm
supposed to do. I'm not tired or weak and I guess I should thank God for
that because from what everyone is saying, I should be feeling that way and
getting worse. Thanks to all you guys, I will start doing what is right.

Go to GNC website and but protein slam vials it is 3 ozs. and 27 grams. I
keep them so that if I am having trouble I can drink just 3 ozs and be
where I need to be for the day. I have never seen short on protein. If
you do not get enough your body starts to break down muscle and you lose
your hair too. Good luck

Protein is the building block for all functions of the body. In addition
to the already great advise I would also suggest getting protein mixes like
Unjury unflavored. That way you can mix it in with pudding, eggs, flavored
water, soup, smoothies etc. (all sugar free of course). I've been
drinking shakes, the standard vanilla, chocolate and strawberry and am
getting sick of them. I am pre-op and have surgery on the 10th of June. I
started drinking earlier than the required pre-op diet to help facilitate
with weightloss. Now I'm getting sick of the taste. Hope that helps.

I was in the same situation until I started using GNC 50 gram slams. (My
fav is milk chocolate over ice.) Not getting in protein made me weak,
nauseous and irritable. The further you get out from surgery, the more
protein you will be able to get from regular foods.

Think of it this way yr heart is a muscle and you need protein for your
muscles .... short term not a huge problem but over the long term you are
going to have problems. You need to find a protein supplement that you can
take. I personally love Syntrax Nectar lots of flavours I live the fuzzy
navel and roadside lemonade. You can get them fairly inexpensively at
drugstore.com, go into your healthfood store and buy one of all kinds of
protein bars, eventually you will find something ... I also like the detour
bars because they taste like a choc bar ... or at least to me.

My surgeon and nutritionist are upset with me because I am not getting
80-100 grams of protein a day!! I know it is so hard to get it all in. I
am likley getting only 40-50 most days. My hair has not fallen out and I
am 5 months P/O from Open RNY. I have tried a plethora of protein products
and have not been able to tolerate most of them. I have a sensitive gag
reflex and very discriminating palette thus the problem. I have hated
every single powder I have tried unless I put all kinds of stuff in it and
then the shakes ended up being waaaaayyy too large for me to drink in one
sitting. I DID finally find one I like.....it is Myoplex pre-mixed dark
chocholate fudge. In a 17 oz shake you get a whopping 42 grams of protein
and it tastes just like chocolate milk. Must drink cold and shake them
very well. I tried the vanilla flavor and I could not handle it---it was
way too sweet tasting and hard for me to get down. Good luck----I hope
this helps you.
