Question:
Has anyone not lost alot of weight doing the pre-op liquid diet?
My surgery is Monday and I am only down a few pounds. I am sticking to this and at this rate, i feel like i might as well eat food. I lost about 20lbs before the liquid diet eating a low fat diet the nut gave me and it was faster to come off than this. — bikermama (posted on May 1, 2008)

You did that makority of the work before the liquid diet, but what is
important about that is to wash your small intestine out before surgery as
they have to open it for RNY WLS. Also some people lose all the weight and
go into a plataeu with the liquid diet and do not lose anything. Best of
succes to you. It is tough for the first month to 6 weeks, and then you
are adapted and it is much easier. I never regreted it and neigther will
you.

I only lost a few pounds on my pre-surgical date diet. You'll be on
liquids and then pureed foods for about the next 4-6 weeks. I'd say if
there is something you'd really like to eat, go ahead and eat it, but don't
gorge. I went to Red Lobster for my "last supper".
You'll probably go on clear liquids Sunday to clean out your digestive
track.

Don't worry about it - the liquid diet is designed to shrink your liver to
make the surgical procedure easier for the surgeon and quicker (with less
anesthesia time) for you. Congratulations on the beginning of your new
life!

I don't think the point of the liquid diet is to lose weight. It is to
shrink your liver so your surgery will be safer. Please don't eat and risk
having your surgery date moved. Good luck. I hope all goes well.

I did not lose weight on the preop diet, si I was a little concerned that
my liver would not be small enough. I had surgery on 4-28-08 and my doctor
said that my liver was small and the surgery was a success. Now my bmi
37.5, I just cut back back, drank a lot of water. Now the day before
surgery, I did drink magnesium citrate laxative to clean out my system. I
had my post op appt today, and I have lost 10 pounds so far. I had the
band done on 4-28-08, so I am on the right track. Good luck!

The 20 pounds you already lost would have shrunk your liver some.....and
the liquid diet is more for making sure you're cleaned out completely...as
well as losing some additional weight. The significance in shrinking your
liver over two weeks prior to surgery is very slight. Honestly, my surgeon
said that it doesn't always work to shrink your liver...some
people....especially obese people, are pre-disposed to have larger livers
anyway. Mine was huge....but healthy....with no fat deposits on it. A
skilled surgeon will not have too much trouble working around that.....it
just makes the surgery last longer...and you may have more bruising because
of their manuvers to get around it. Don't stress yourself out before
surgery with this. Focus on eating as healthy as possible.....liquid or
otherwise....and make sure you do the cleansing and DON'T EAT those two
days prior to surgery. I lost 10 pounds those two days....just from the
cleansing. I couldn't eat anything but clear liquids two days prior...and
did the fun citrus drink they have you do to empty you out. You'll be fine
come Monday..... they're not going to cancel your surgery at this point in
time....unless you were to gain 10 pounds suddenly.....and you won't.
You'll look back over this week after you've had your surgery..and will
wonder why you had such angst over all of this! Hugs and best wishes.
Your life is about to become much sweeter! Cheryl
