Question:
Experiencing severe cramping and nausea when I eat.

I have an inflamed kidney and urine tests show I am dumping lots of protein and ketones in my urine. I can't drink or eat anything without severe cramping.    — vippie (posted on January 16, 2008)

I would call your doctor at once, even tonight. If you can not reach him you need to get to the emergency room at the hospital where you had your surgery, if possible. Something is not right. It sounds like your kidneys are not functioning correctly. Ketones are normal, but Protien is not.

I second the opinion...call your doctor right away. This is serious. Any time you are having lost sof pain and can't drink anything you need to contact your doctor.

Obviously, you need to see your doc but I'm assuming that you already have because it's difficult to self-diagnosis an inflamed kidney and ketosis/proteinuria. I'm guessing you have some kind of kidney infection? Protein in your urine can be caused by many things and usually points to some kind of kidney touble... but can be caused by many things including dehydration/strenuous exercise/stress. Ketones in your urine is generally not a big deal provided your blood sugar is in control. The body produces ketones when it does not have enough glucose/sugar to provide energy to cells. If you are diabetic, lack of insulin keeps your body from being able to use glucose in the blood so your body uses a different type of energy and ketones are the waste. When you are not eating (much) carbohydrates, your blood has very little glucose so it also make a different type of energy with ketones as a waste. Ketones in your urine with a normal blood sugar are not considered problematic especially if you are on a doctor supervised diet. You really need to contact your doctor about the severe cramping and inability to eat/drink... if you've already got these other problems, being dehydrated and not eating aren't going to help. Best wishes.
