Question:
My surgery was aborted because I am 24 weeks pregnant!
Thanks so much for all of your help and support and info through all this. I wanted to let you know what happened with my surgery. All was going as planned, they put me under and made the 4 incisions, when Dr. Mun got the camera and stuff in there he noticed that my uterus was really large....turns out I am 24 weeks pregnant! So my surgery was aborted. Dr. Mun told me I would still be a good cadidate after the baby is born (Due date of April 22, 2008). I'm in such shock because I have PCOS and was told I wouldn't ovulate without medical intervention since I was 17 years old, PLUS I was taking birth control up until November 28th (when I stopped because of the surgery), PLUS 3 months ago I was feeling crappy in the mornings for about 2 weeks straight...and my boss jokingly said "maybe you're pregnant" and I started to think that maybe I was so I bought an EPT home test from CVS and it was negative! It's been so crazy, since I've been losing weight since Sept. that I could have been growing a baby in there!! Luckily they did an ultrasound and everything has checked out normal and the baby seems to be fine and on track. He truly is a miracle baby, and with only 3 months to go I need to get crackin'. Has this happened to anyone else?!?! I'm kind of freaking out, but getting my brain caught up with my body! Once again thanks SO much for lall your help and support, and keep me in your thoughts that this baby is OK and that I can get back on the WLS track! — fijifruits (posted on January 5, 2008)

i just have a question for you. didn't the doctor do pre-op bloodwork on
you? it is usually standard to do a pregnancy test. wow, you must of been
shocked when you woke up!

Thats the first thing I thought about to- Why was a pregnancy test not done
the day of surgery? That has been a preop requirement uh.... since before
I was born. Its just a urine quickie. The only exception is when a
hysterectomy had already been performed. Even a tubal is only 98% depending
on which research you go with. The other 2% is why all women of
childbearing age who go through the ER where I work have to have a negative
test before major procedures unless the benefits outweigh the risks. I
would still consider consulting with a perinatologist (High risk OB
specialist) due to the fact that the first 24 weeks you were not on any
prenatal vitamins and had been in the process of trying to loose weight.
Not to mention you had been put under sedation for a procedure. Someone
above was looking out for you two, sometimes there are different cards
dealt to us. Best of luck to you. Having had 2 babies since RNY I
personally wish I had waited until I was done having kids first. It has
been alot more work getting back down after the 3rd. My first one was
before RNY. Don't get in a super hurry to have surgery right after your
baby it can take a few months for your body to totally heal from pregnancy
nutrition wise, its a bad idea to jump right onto that table at the first
open slot if offered by your surgeon. Good Luck!

I find it very disturbing that your surgeon did not make sure to do a
pregnancy test prior to your surgery. I wonder what else your surgeon
neglects to do. I hope you consider switching to another surgeon for your
WLS. Think what could have happenned to both you and your child. I am so
happy for you to have conceived a child and to have such a wonderful
surprise! Bast of luck to you and your family. What a blessing.

Congratulations!!! I'm in agreement with the others, though - they should
have done a pre-op pregnancy test - they did it with me.
Another thought for you - try to nurse your baby, as long and as much as
you can. It's sooo good for the baby, and it will be great for you too. It
uses up so many calories, and causes you to think about what you're eating
(since everything that goes into you goes into the baby too), you're bound
to lose some weight without even thinking about it. I had lost all of my
pregnancy weight in just 10 days, and went on to lose another 30 pounds,
just from nursing.
Congrats again and best of luck to your family!

Congrats on your pregnancy especially wihthe PCOS. I am totally shocked
that your surgeon did not do a pregnancy. In most hospitals in it is
mandatory that a pregnancy test be done before anyone of child bearing age
goes under anesthesia. You could have easily lost that precious baby but
by the grace of GOD you were lucky. I definitely think I would ask why
the hospital does not have a policy about this. It may prevent someone
form loosing a baby in the future. Take care of yourself and remember how
blessed you are.

I'm shocked like the others. Your pre-op blood work should have shown a
pregnancy. I haven't had a cycle in 6 years and they STILL did a pregnancy
test on me. But, I'm the mommy of a miracle myself. After a bout of mono,
meningitis, encephalitis, myelitis, my parents were told from age 5 that
I'd never have children. Had a miscarriage after I got married then got
pregnant 2 months later. I'm really, REALLY concerned about your surgeon's
lack of regard here. I find this INCREDIBLY disturbing. Congrats on the
new baby!!!

For over 3 years now I've been reading a lot of Q/A's and this is the first
time I've put in my two cents worth. I just want to say with all my heart
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Having a baby is the greatest!!! Your little one is
truly a miracle. ENJOY every minute of what is left of your pregnancy and
then enjoy every minute of your baby's life. I will absolutely be praying
for you. After you have your little miracle do not lose your umph for WLS.
It is so worth it. God bless
