Question:
I am afraid of failing

it seems that I can eat and not get sick...I hear stories how people say they can't eat bread or steak or chicken.... what are you susposed to feel like when this happens? and can you streatch your new tummy out this quick? I feel like a failure ... it is not that I am eating alot or more it seems I just can eat anything... am I susposed to feel like this? plus I have lost about 24 pounds and I just had the operation 10-28-07 does this sound normal?    — victoria-o9-28-07 (posted on October 25, 2007)

When did you have your surgery?? You put 10-28-07, but today is only 10-25-07. Maybe you meant 09-28-07? If you had your surgery almost a month ago I think 24 pounds lost is very reasonable. I also think everyone is different in what they can handle and eat. Just try to make sure you are eating what you are supposed to and how much you are supposed to and you should be fine.

Relax, try to focus on how much and what you are eating, not failing. Yes, you can stretch your new stomach out at any point. I'm assuming you meant to type that you had the surgery on 9-28-07 and not 10-28-07 (today is only 10-25-07). If so, you seem to be right on track with your loss, but remember different people lose differently. Also remember this is ONLY a tool! You have to use your mind to make sure you ONLY eat the foods etc you are to eat at each stage and ONLY eat the amounts you are to eat at each stage. Once you take the focus off of failing and put it where it needs to be (size of what you eat, what you eat and exercise) you will be a lot happier! Take care, God bless, and welcome to the losing side!

Be grateful! I had my surgery 4 years ago and I never want to feel that horrible feeling again. It is the most miserable feeling! You won't fail. I can eat like a normal person should be eating and have maintaned my weight loss. I lost 30 pounds the first month.

Your new pouch is still healing so you need to be very careful of what you put into it. At this point you should be eating soft foods only about 2-4 oz. no more. Make sure you speak to your nutritionist to make sure you are following the program or you will not be successful and will stretch your pouch. 24 lbs in a month is excellent!

During the "honeymoon period", about 6 mo. after RNY (done in 7/06) for me, I experienced a lot of dumping that seemed to be related to *WHAT* I ate. Bread, and scrambled eggs especially, seemed to do it for me, regardless of how much or how little of those "bad" things I consumed. After the honeymoon period, I have been able to eat about anything I want without fear of dumping. That takes care of the *WHAT*. I STILL experience the dumping syndrome if I consume too much or don't chew well. Of course, everyone is different and will have to adjust to the foods that they can tolerate over the long haul. I am assuming you also had RNY; the lap-banders will not experience the dumping syndrome. Too bad for them, in my view, because avoidance of dumping has been a big factor on keeping me on the "straight and narrow" with my eating and my post surgery success with weight loss.

Hey there! You are doing great! Welcome to the loser's bench! I posted nearly the same post 2weeks post op, I am now 5weeks out. For me, the first 2.5 weeks or so I really don't think I felt the pouch. I was hungry, I could eat things or amounts I dont think I should've, THEN all of a sudden about 3 weeks out my pouch "woke up" and now I can only eat about 3Tbsp of soft/pureed food. I agree with everybody else's advice. Stick to your nutrisionists and surgeons plan. Your new tummy will "wake up" here soon and it'll be a whole nother thing. You can't fail at this type of surgery and certainly not so soon. You are on track and you are doing awesome. Even if you can eat "anything" DONT honey! Seriously, you've gone through too much. Just stick to your plan another couple weeks and it'll all be fine. ;o) Take care & congrats on the 24lbs! ~Tomi

Everyone is different. I am over two years out and I still get sick. However, my friend that had her surgery last year has never gotten sick and has always been able to eat whatever--just small portions. She has done really great with her weightloss. Just be real careful that you don't overeat. You sound like your'e doing great. Have faith in yourself!!

Hello, I feel the same way you do. I had my surgery on 9/24 and I am down about 35 lbs. I have stayed at that for the last couple of weeks but I haven't been able to excerise like I want as I have had to pack one of my incesions and it is almost closed now so I hope to start my excercising this week. Nothing seems to make me sick either. I stay away from sugar and rice as I have read too many horror stories on that. I don't like being sick so why temp fate. lol. I notice I just eat a whole lot less now a days. I know I eat more than two or three ozs like a lot say but I don't eat nearly as much at one setting as I use to. I have just come to the conclusion I have a steel stomach. lol. I am glad you posted this as I have been wanting to too.

First of all, this is not all in your head! I had RNY surgery almost 5 years ago, and as soon as they told me I could go off soft foods and eat regular foods, I ate a sub sandwich AND NEVER GOT FULL! I ate slow, I followed all the rules, and by the time I got the whole sandwich down, I was in tears! I knew my surgeon had messed up. I never had nausea, I never felt full, and I was eating as much as I did before surgery. And I know in my heart (and the Lord knows) that I was not the one who stretched my pouch out. It couldn't have happened overnight. My surgeon was supposed to make my pouch the size of an egg, and HE DIDN'T DO IT! I looked into suing him, because long story short, I only went from 300 lbs. to 280 lbs. My advice is to stick with your surgeon and make him find out what went wrong. I left my surgeon and never went back. And I'm as miserable as I ever was!
