Question:
Has anyone experienced a bladder infection right after surgery?
I am 5 days post op from lap rny. The pain has been tolerable, except for a stabbing pain in my lower left abdomen. It is hard to be able to stand straight or walk without supporting my side. Today I have noticed a tinge of dark color when I wipe from urination. And my dain tube has had more fluid today than it has. Could this be a bladder infection, or is this normal? — Terrijean (posted on September 29, 2007)

If your urine is discolored, I would see the doctor right away. I have
read about so many people, post surgury that get dehydrated, and seem to
bring on a UTI. Don't wait until it makes you so sick that it effects your
healing time. Lesleigh in Ga.

I am 4 months out and have just been treated for a bladder infection as
well. Try to drink some diet cranberry juice if you are able. or lots of
water. and call your doctor.

I'm concerned about the stabbing pain, call you doc right away. I had
discolored urine right after surgery, but not 5 days later.

It will be 2 weeks for me on Tues. but my left side hurts too, especailly
at nights. I just think it's probally gas pains. But my urine is fine.
My problem is, I was so hungry I started trying soft food early and
tolerated it well, even crackers if I chew them good. But I eat more than
what I should be able to, like a bowl of soup or something. I wonder if
this is normal.

I am 9 days out from RNY. I had the Jackson-Pratt drain in place after my
sugery. The day after my sugery, I was turning over in bed and started to
experience terrible pain in my lower right side. I couldn't move, it felt
like something was cutting me on the inside. Luckily, my doctor came to
make rounds and it turns out the the drain tube had dropped inside me and
was behind my bladder. He pulled it right then and it was instant relief.

99% of people are catheterized during surgery... if you didn't wake up
with one, it was most likely removed in recovery before you were totally
awake. Being catheterized is a major risk factor for a UTI, so it is
possible you have a bladder infection. If you were on (or are on)
antibiotics pre/post surgery, I'd think that'd give you some protection.
There are over the counter UTI test strips that you can buy, AZO is one
brand, my CVS pharmacy has that plus a cheaper generic.
Whatever happens, please do get in touch with your surgeon or doctor.
