Question:
I really need some help......will power

I had lapband surgery sept. 7, 2007. My surgery went well not much pain just discomfort. I feel like I am fighting a losing battle :-(. I have already cheated with the band....I am having a terrible time with wanting food that I did not even want before. I have started myself on soft foods because I was so weak but I think I have made a mistake. I really am just looking for some inspiration. I would appreciate any advice. I do not want to fail at this and I think If I could get some advice from people whom have already been through lap band I could better help myself. Thank You so much Melissa    — daizygurl27 (posted on September 16, 2007)

I will tell you that I struggled with all those things as well. I had the same fears. I felt as though I had made a horrible mistake and that I was going to sabotage the decision I had made. I am now just over six months out from surgery and could not be happier with my decision. I have lost almost 80 pounds. That is 80 pounds that I never would have been able to lose on my own without the band. It was very difficult for me until I got a good amount of restriction in my band. My doctor is aggressive with his fills, so I was up to 7 cc in a 10 cc band on the second fill. It has been a great experience for me thus far and I believe that it will be for you too as long as you allow it to be. I have had to learn to stop kicking myself for "cheating" because the only thing that leads me to do is feel bad for myself and "cheat" more. I have to put the head stuff about my food addiction away and think about me and my health now. I hope this has been helpful to you and that you are able to get at least some reassurance that you are normal out of this. I remember taking a bite of something way before I was out of the postop diet, so don't feel like you are the only one with temptations and struggles with this. I do not believe that you and I are the only ones on OH that have had this happen.

There's no such thing as "cheating" when your body is starving for food. If you're eating mashed up fresh fruits and vegetables, perhaps some nice fish as well, some low fat yogurt maybe, EAT. You need to eat to lose weight.

WOW...I was just going to post a question pretty much EXACTLY like yours! But from the answers, I see we're not the only two that are going thru this. I had my LapBand on 9/4 and was starving within 5 days. I ended up only eating homemade split pea soup because it was the only thing that would satisfy me. I had my first post-op appointment yesterday and the doctor moved me to soft foods. I can still eat more then I'm supposed to but the doctor said right now is the time for healing and we can't worry about weight loss until I start getting fills which isn't for another 6 weeks. I can eat much, much less then I used to but more then I'm supposed to. The diet plan the nutritionist gives (well, mine anyway) is generic, it's not customized to fit each and every individual. My doctor just said right now if you're hungry eat, but chew, be careful and only add one new food per meal to see how well the food is tolerated. I was feeling like such a loser before I went to see my doctor but he truly put my bad feelings to rest. Now, if I could just get to exercising! By the way, email me if you want the split pea soup recipe, trust me...it's very satisfying. Good luck and take care! :) Sue
