Both me, my mother, and two of my bestfriends all drink sodas, icetea, and coffee, all with caffeine with no problems. Only the health nuts will tell you that its bad for you... Or that the soda will cause problems with your pouch. My aunt had this surgery over ten years ago and drinks soda all the time and it has never stretched her pouch. Myself, mother and two friends all drink sodas and we don't have trouble, my pouch hasn't stretched at all.... So, enjoy!!!

I guess that I am going to be labeled a "health nut" after telling you this... Caffiene can affect you detrimentally in 2 ways... 1. It can affect your hydration status. It suppressed the ADH (antidiuretic hormone release), that is why you urinate alot when you drink alot.. 2. caffeine is an irritant.. maybe not as bad for the lapband people, but definitely a no-no for the RNY. Soda is an irritant as well due to the acids in it (carbonic acid), with caffeine - has the same drawbacks as caffeine as noted above. Also the carbonation can make you uncomfortable due to the gas bubbles. Any of the surgeons that I have talked to tell you that you should stick to no/low cal decaf drinks and water.... good luck to you...

I contacted my Nut last week about "decaf coffee and tea" last week. She told me exactly the same as above with one additional reason NOT to drink caffeine......caffeine will stimulate your appetite. She also commented on the fact that caffeine robs you of nutrients. I don't know about you, but with popping these vitamins and supplements all the time, I don't want them to go to waste. Good Luck!

As the above folks answered, caffeine is crappy for us for several reasons: -it is a diuretic, and we are at enough risk for dehydration and not getting enough fluids in without consuming things that will take it away -it's also an irritant to the stomach lining, -and it stimulates the production of cortisol, which stimulates insulin production. The insulin production tells our bodies to seek and store energy and stimulates our appetites to get more sugar/energy. These are the reasons we are told to avoid caffeine. Just because we can have it and tolerate it, doesn't mean we should have it.
