Question:
Gaining weight when starting solids?
I am 11 days post op, the first 8 days when I was on the liquid and pureed diet I lost 13 pounds. Since I was able to start on more solids, I've gained 3 pounds back. Is this normal? Thanks for your answers! — Gayelene (posted on March 31, 2007)

I think it might be the foods you are eatting. Are you staying away from
the breads, pastas and sugar?? I too lost 13 lbs the first week and then
when I went on puree's the weight didnt come off so fast I'm down 22lbs in
6 weeks I lose about a lb a week or so. My advice to you is watch what your
putting in your mouth write everything down so you can see where you might
be going wrong. Dont panic if you still continue to gain make an appt with
your dr. GOOD LUCK!!

I did. I think 2-3 lbs. My NUT said it was normal since your body was not
getting any nutrients from what you were eating on the liquid/puree diet;
do you body is replenishing some of it's nutrient storgae from food. Just
make healthy decisions when eating "real" foods - stay away from
bread, pasta and the like. If you do eat some (like lagansa) keep your
balance in check 3 bites of protein to every one bit of veggie or carb. I
teetered between 2-4 lbs for like 1.5 weeks, then started losing again.
-40lbs. since 2/51/07 surgery.

Are you measuring your portions? What are you eating? Are you exercising?
Are you getting in all of your water? All of these things can have an
influence upon your weight loss/gain. You will find that it won't always
be a steady drop in the weight. You will drop, hit a plateau, then drop
again, or not drop weight for a while, but drop in clothes sizes. So, just
do what you have been instructed to do. If you follow the rules, you WILL
lose it. Don't compare your weight loss with others, as everyone is
different and everyone's metabolism is different. Keep up on the exercise,
remember the more lean muscle tissue you have the higher your metabolism
will be, even when you are at rest and sleeping... good luck to you and
congrats on the surgery.

Hi RayLene, congratulations on your new you! Honey, you are weighing every
day? That always plays with your head. I really encourage you to pick one
day a week and weigh on that day, same time. Keep to protein, water and
begin to walk just a little. Sometimes we lose several pounds, and then
our bodies have to adjust, so what you are going through could be very
normal. Don't let your head trick you, do what your doctor said to do and
don't weigh daily. This is a lifetime change, breathe and treat it like a
habit to weigh weekly and diet regularly. You can do it girl! Patricia P.
