Question:
Has any one had gastric sleeve surgery?
I am looking for someone that has had this procedure. I went to a support group meeting no one there out of 20 people have had this surgery. I feel like a human guinea pig. Please help! — duvallrt (posted on December 21, 2006)

One reason you're having a problem finding others with this rather new
procedure is that it's known by so many names. In addition to
"gastric sleeve," it's also known as the "sleeve
gastrectomy," the "vertical sleeve," the "vertical
gastrectomy," and more. But it has a forum here; just look under
"Forums" for "Vertical Sleeve." There are also several
Yahoo groups for people interested in this surgery. One is at
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/sleevegastrectomy/
Good luck.

No reason to feel like a 'human guinea pig'. :) The VSG is actually a
VERY common procedure -- it is done every day as the first part of the DS
(duodenal switch). Sometimes surgeons will do the VSG on the super
morbidly obese to get them to a healthier weight with the intention of
completing the intestinal part of the surgery later. Many patients end up
losing enough with just the VSG that the intestinal/malabsorptive part of
the surgery isn't necessary. Personally, I think it's a fantastic choice
for light weights or very young patients. I hope you find lots of support
and information out there!
