Question:
Why didn't I dump?

I accidentally drank a couple of glasses of full sugar fruit punch I thought was sugar free. I didn't dump at all. I actually felt nothing. I am almost 9 months post op RNY. Whats the deal?    — shannonwaycott (posted on October 28, 2006)

I think you'll be alright. It's a good thing you didn't dump, means your system is adjusting.

DONT GO THERE with that kind of thinking. Just because the sugar drink did not make you dump. That is where I got into problems. I am 3 yrs out & little by little started eating candy, cake here & there & started syaing to myself oh that did not hurt me so I can have it. Do go there Stay away from Sugar forever if at all possible. It will turn your hard work into regained pounds down the road. After the honeymoon period ends everything get harder. If you can stay away from it you will be better off.

Some things you will find won't make you dump that probably should, while others that you think will be okay WILL. And sometimes things that didn't make you dump one day will the next. It takes a little while to get the swing of how your body is going to react to things. I have been able to drink juice with no problems, but I didn't know that for a long time because I never tried it. But still to this day cereal will make me sicker than a dog....just a little bit of it. A PB&J sandwich is fine for me. But add milk and I'm doomed. Have a latte with milk? I'm fine. Sugar free ice cream makes me sick, but a little of the real stuff is not so bad. Why? Who knows - my body adjusts all on its own - as will yours. Just because you didn't dump this time doesn't mean you won't. I'm 2.5 years out and still am learning. Also, don't forget that you might end up experiencing late dumping and not be able to figure it out right away. About a year ago I started experiencing this and didn't figure it out for awhile. I thought I was having hot flashes. I got super duper hot - sweaty...and then I would get famished and had to eat crackers or something similar. Well, it was hypoglycemia and I didn't realize it. Once I put two and two together I posted it here and confirmed what I thought. Late dumping usually happens about 3 hours after your offending meal or drink. So keep those things in mind and be smart about your food choices. If you find something doesn't make you sick, don't take that as a license to have it. People gain easily after wls - so be careful to not push the envelope. Learn to live with food and not be obsessive either way, but be aware of empty calories that can be satisfied with something else. :o)

Some peopl.e do not dump from sugar. You just have to be careful not to drink high-sugar things. My niece had the surgery, and she has been able to eat "goodies" from day one.

I only dump when I have too much sugar and fat. Remember everybody is different and you might dump on something once and never again.
