Question:
Tired, yawn....
I'm 3.5 months post op. I've lost 51 pounds. I'm really tired all the time. Anyone else had this? Did anyone take iron supplements? I am taking B12 and a daily chewable multi vitamin. Need advice. Thanks. Laurie — LaurieH (posted on May 8, 2006)

you should be asking your dietican this question. We can not give medical
advise. Some females do need extra supplements, but you need to have the
blood tests first.

I was feeling that too at about 4 months and went to my doctor for blood
work which you should do about every 3 to 4 months and I found out my
magnesium was low. You should ask your doctor about getting blood work to
find out if all your levels are where they should be. Beth G

Definately talk to your surgeon. Supplements are a required fact of life
after surgery. I had the same difficulty and found it was a serious iron
defficiency.
Good luck,

I had the same problem. My doctor did not know why, but did prescribe me
the B-12. It did not help. I do not dump generally, but did figure out
that eating makes me tired, especially certain types of food. It is better
now although I still can get knocked flat if I eat something I shouldn't.
Good luck.

Hi Laurie - I agree with the rest of them. You probably need some blood
tests. I do know that my surgeon has women that are still in the
"child bearing age" taking Iron. He also has us take vitamins
twice daily as if you had a gastric bypass, you have a small amount of
mal-absorbtion. We also take multi-vitamins, vitamin C +D, & iron
twice daily and a 1000 mcg sublingual B12 once daily. How are you doing
getting in all of your Protien in every day? You need about 65 grams
daily.

Hi...I'm about 5 months post-op and feel the same way...always tired. I
take all my supplements and all my labs come back fine!! I was sure my
labs would show I was low in something...especially since everyone I know
that had this surgery talks about how much extra energy they have since
having it. I cut out caffiene...but recently drank a sugar free Red
Bull....that was the most energy I've had since surgery...actually felt
motivated to clean my house..top to bottom...but I can't depend on Red Bull
to give me energy...what is wrong with me? (LAP RNY 12/22/05)

From Laurie,
I called my doc's office (they never call me) and followed up on my blood
work from last week at my 3 month check up.
It's fine. Cholesterol is still high 262 but I had not fasted before the
test.
Maybe it's the water and protein. More likely the water. I probably don't
get enough.
Thanks for responding... and yes, I do caffeine loads on days when I'm
really wiped out.

Hi, I am also 3,5month after surgery and I had the same problem{I felt very
tired,no energy}. What I found for myself is that- not every gastric
patients absorb sublingval vitamin B12,so I start give myself injection of
B12.It helps me tremendosly.Try that for yourself.Good luck!

Laurie, how is your fluid intake? I am scheduled to see my surgeon
tomorrow because they suspect I may be dehydrated. I'm only 4 weeks out
but I'm overly tired all the time too. They think it's possible that I've
passed the point of "catching up" on my own and that I may need
IV fluids.

I'm always amazed that ppl are launched without iron as a requirement ike
calcium. In essence, we ALL need an iron supplement (not ferrous sulfate)
because the food does not digest (the gastro part of gastric BYPASS) and it
does not go thru the duodenum, which is where iron is absorbed. I usually
think of 150mg elemental iron as a minimum, personally. Just remember,
that iron is always taken with vit C, but not with dairy, caffeine, whole
grains or eggs. Not with any other vites, minerals or meds. Alone,
together for at least an hour.
