Question:
Has anyone been told they have sleep apnea after wls.
I am 3 years out and I have to go for a sleep study in a few days. I have lost 150lbs, but my husband says I stop breathing in my sleep. I used to snore bad but now I do not. I wake up every morning with bad headache. Has anyone every been told after wls that they have sleep apnea. — paidnfull (posted on March 23, 2006)

Most are checked before WLS. Apparently you werent. Anyhow a large
percentage of WLS see their apnea go away, it appears you werent lucky.
However thin folks get apnea too, and there are a variety of reasons and
treatments, including surgery to be rid of it. Good your getting it checked
and CONGRATS on the 150 pounds thats awesome!

While I do not have sleep apnea I know several people who do have it. My
brother has had obstructive sleep apnea for about 8 years and it is due to
his weight. My husband's assistant pastor developed central sleep apnea
last year. Obstructive is the most common kind with 9 out of 10 cases. This
is probably what you had before your surgery. With prolonged untreated
apnea it usually gets worse and results in the bad headaches every morning.
Along with the headaches it is possible to start dosing off during the
day...even during driving so, please be careful. The central apnea is a
central nervous system problem. It is simply when the signal is not sent
from your brain to breathe at the right time or the signal is interrupted.
I do hope your sleep study goes well and that they will find an answer to
your problem. ~~~Pamela~~~

I was diagnosed last year with sleep apnea, I'm almost 3 years post-op. I
had a sleep study before my WLS and I was fine, My pulmonary Dr. feels my
apnea is related to my asthma and I use a c-pap machine, funny thing I have
never snored.

I had sleep apnea bad when I went into WLS.....still have it. I don't
think after 216 lbs its going anywhere. So I am living with it. Just
started to have problems with asthma again. Not sure why?
