Question:
Weight loss issue.
I had weight loss surgery on October 18, 2005. I have only lost 37 lbs. I started at 217 and now weigh 180. I have been at this weight for almost 2 months. I feel like I am following the program. (protein, excersise, diet) Could I be done losing? Can you be at a plateau this long? Help!! Carol S — carols (posted on March 8, 2006)

You may not be eating enough and that slows down the metabolism and weight
loss. I would eat one more meal per day. A small one though. Protien and a
fruit maybe...

I totally know what you are feeling like. i have been at a plateau for
almost 6 weeks now. i had surgery 10/6. i have lost about 60lbs. i'm
workingout at curves 3x a week - have stepped up my workout - really
pushing myself this week - hoping to see the scale move but with no luck
yet. i was at this weight for about 5-6 years maybe 20 years ago. i was
told htat when your body gets to a weight where you were for a long time it
has a hard time letting go of it. i was told to be patient. and BOY it's
frustrating. Hang in there - keep doing what you are supposed to be doing
and it should come off.

I also had surgery on 10/18/05 - started at 288 and am now down to 216. I
don't know how tall you are or how much weight your doctor projected you
would lose, but I know that 217 is already a pretty low number to start at
and most patients who weigh less will lose a lot slower. Do you work out? I
work out on a regular basis... started about a month after surgery and work
out nearly every single day for almost two hours. My weight loss has slowed
down in the last month or two and you can expect that, especially after the
four month mark. What has your doctor said?

Hi Carol... I would call my surgeon to have them order some tests to make
sure you do not have any staple line problems, etc. While losing 37 lbs is
a bit on the slow side you started at a lower weight to be plateaued for 2
months that early out is a bit concerning. I can see it happening for 3-4
weeks but for 2 months definitely call your surgeon.Perhaps, you could
provide us with a typical daily diet and exercise plan and we could give
some feedback. Good luck!

What does your food/activity diary say? I had surgery 10/10 and have my
weightloss slowed incredibly down about 3 weeks ago. I have been
exercising 5-6 days per week but haven't been following a strict diet. I
started my journal again yesterday and was surprised that I am consuming up
to about 1800 calories a day. I estimate burning 500 calories a day through
cardio and weightlifting. Go back to basics and work with your program
center to determine strategies.

The first two month after surgery I did not loose any weight. But the
first year I lost 102 Lbs. In your case I will contact the doctor 'soffice
and will make an appointment with the nutritionist to discuss your food.
The doctor must be aware of this. Good luck.

Carol,
I had surgery in Sept. 2001. I weighed 450lbs. You really werent that
overweight, but I don't know the whole story. Anyhow, I remember going
through a stall for about 6 weeks. You might want to change your exercise
routine, up your protein intake, and make sure you are drinking water.
Also, try not to snack. Oh, I have lost a total of 240lbs. I am going to
have my skin removed this summer. Let me know if I can do anything for
you. Samantha Ogletree
