You won't be eating much. I can only speak about the plan I was on after surgery, plans may be different between surgeons. The first 2 weeks post-op - full liquid diet. Pretty much, if it could go through a straw (not that you'll use a straw), its considered a liquid. The next 3 weeks was the soft-solid phase. Most soft foods and some crackers and thin sliced deli meats were on my list. After that, I was off dietary restrictions and was set free to run amuk.

I had my surgery through the Barix Center and their diet was very specific and very well spelled out. Hopefully, your surgeon will give you instructions. For me, it was CLEAR liquids the first week i.e. broth, s/f jello, s/f popsicles (anything I could see through) Isopure Protein drinks. After that, it was two weeks of FULL liquids. I could add Milk, s/f pudding, s/f fudgsicles, s/f yogurt w/no fruit or seeds, blended and strained soups etc.. After that, two weeks of PUREED foods. Basically anything with the consistence of baby food. This grossed me out so I ate a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese. The last step was one week of SOFT foods, soft scrambled eggs, toast, cooked potatoe, cooked veggies, canned fruit, ground meat etc... That was a six week program, followed with slowly introducing full foods. From there it has been a trial and error process to see what my body will/will not tolerate. Good luck!

It depends on your surgeon. My surgeon has this diet progression. 1. Clear liquid (in hospital) 2. Full liquid (until week 3) 3. Pureed (weeks 3-6 4. High Protein, Low Fiber (week 6) This gives you pouch a lot of healing time.

My RYNGB was last Friday morning 2/3/2006 and was a success. I had no complications and was the hospital two days. I have read so many agonizing stories prior to having my surgery I expected the worst. My pain has been minimal. I guess the old saying is correct most people only remember the bad things and we take the good for granted. Right now I am home on my last day of clear liquids to which I am already adding soy protein. I have not experienced any nausea since the operation. This is workig for me. My best advice would be for you to follow the advice of your doctor.

Didn't your doctor give you a diet? If not, call and ask. My doctor gave me a list of foods I could eat right after (clear liquids), then when to begin certai nfoods. If not, then you should call the dietician at the hospital where you are having surgery. LOL - I got a handbook from the doctor, a handbook from the bariatric center, and a handbook from the dietician! You can also go online and do a search for bariatric surgery diets. Basically, you do clear liquids for a ffew weeks, then go to regualr liquids, then slowly ad pureed, then solid foods. think of how you would feed an infant - first milk, then light pureed cereal, then soft food, the real food. Your stomach has to readjust. Don't be in a hurry!
