A skilled laparoscopic surgeon can perform an RNY in about 50-70 minutes.
The open procedure tends to take longer (assuming surgeons of equal skill)
because of the time it takes to open a patient and to to then close the
wounds. Also, it is rare that a patient "has" to have an open
RNY. You may choose a surgeon who is more comfortable performing the
procedure open (a personal choice), but except in the absolute rarest of
circumstances, no amount of scar tissue or high BMI is necessary a
hinderance to the laparoscopic performance of the RNY.

Mine was a Lap RNY and took 2 hours and 10 minutes I had alot of scar
tissue from a previous Lap procedure about 20 years ago and that took some
extra time cleaning that up. My sister in law had hers open and it took
about the same time of course my healing time was much shorter than hers.
I really had very little pain and was up walking that afternoon after
surgery. Good Luck to you...Nancy

I had my surgery done 12/27/01 and it was open and it took 1 1/2 hours. I
had no complications during surgery.

Mine took 45 minutes and I had zero complications. It all depends on the
skill level and how many lap procedures your surgeon has done. Good luck!
