HI, Well IMHO I don't buy that if they did Insurance companies would waste
the money to pay for it if the statistics where that high. I know that some
do but NOT That many Best Wishes.

YOUR DOCTOR NEEDS TO GET IN ANOTHER LINE OF WORK OR HE NEEDS TO GET FACTS
BEFORE HE OPENS HIS MOUTH ON SOMETHING SO MEDICALLY & EMOTIONALLY
IMPORTANT.
THE OVER ALL STATS SUGGEST THAT 15% WILL FAIL MAINLY BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO
ADHERE TO THE RESTRICTIVE DIET. 85% WILL SUCCEED TO LOSE WEIGHT & TO
KEEP THAT WEIGHT OFF. OF THE 85% WHO ARE SUCCESSFUL, THE AVERAGE WEIGHT
LOSS IS 65% OF THE AMOUNT THEY ARE OVERWEIGHT. SOME WILL LOSE MORE; SOME
WILL LOSE LESS, BUT TAKING ALL SUCCESSFUL WLS PATIENTS AS A GROUP, THE
AVERAGE % OF WEIGHT LOST & KEPT OFF WAS 65% OF THEIR OVERWEIGHT
AMOUNT.
WITH THIS AVERAGE ... IF YOU HAD 100 #s TO LOSE ... IF YOU WERE AVERAGE ...
YOU'D LOSE & KEEP OFF 65 #s FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. IF YOU WERE
ABOVE AVERAGE, YOU'D LOSE & KEEP OFF MORE THAN 65 #s, & IF YOU WERE
BELOW AVERAGE, YOU'D LOSE & KEEP OFF LESS THAN 65 #s. BUT, IN ALL 3
SCENERIOS, WEIGHT LOSS WOULD OCCUR & IT WOULD BE MAINTAINED.
THIS ISN'T THE EASY WAY OUT. IT IS AN AMAZING "TOOL" TO ALLOW US
TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD IN REGARDS TO OVERCOMING HEREDITY, GENETICS,
SLOW MOTABALISM, ETC. JUST BECAUSE THE POUCH LIMITS THE AMOUNT OF FOOD ONE
CAN INGEST AT ANY SITTING, YOU CAN EXPECT TO LOSE UP TO 100 #s IN 6 MONTHS
OR SO IF YOU ARE FAITHFUL WITH YOUR LIQUIDS, DIET, SUPPLEMENTS &
EXERCISE. AFTER THAT, THE POUCH HAS DONE IT'S MAIN JOB & IT'S UP TO
YOU TO STEP UP THE EXERCISE & ACTIVITY TO LOSE MORE WEIGHT.
REMEMBER, THE POUCH IS ONLY A "TOOL". YOU ARE STILL RESPONSIBLE
FOR YOUR SUCCESS OR FAILURE. YOU CAN "GRAZE" ALL DAY LONG ON
CHIPS ONE CHIP AT A TIME & BY THE END OF THE DAY, YOU WILL HAVE EATEN
THE WHOLE BAG. YOU CAN GO RIGHT BACK TO THE FAST FOODS, FRIED FOODS, CHIPS
& DIP, SODA & ALL THE OTHER FOODS THAT HELPED GET YOU HERE. OR,
YOU CAN TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO REGAIN YOUR HEALTH, ACTIVE LIFESTYLE &
DIGNITY BY FOLLOWING THE "RULES".
IT'S YOUR CHOICE ... SUCCESS OR FAILURE.

What type of surgery was he referring to? That may be true of the old VBG,
but not for the RNY (by-pass)

check it out this surgery is not just a quick means of weight loss, It is a
tool to help you loose the weight and its up to you to keep it off. He is
saying 75% gain it back well its true alot of people do gain (sum) of the
weight back as soon as you stop your strict diet. So yes there is some that
fail but hey you gotta be strong and not fail and dont let that doctor get
you down, I mean most doctors push for this surgery if you need it. whats
wrong with your doctor? Or does he just think you need to do it on your
own? or go get a second opion.

Before any statistics should be quoted, the TYPE of wls needs to be
determined. VGB has higher weight gain statistics than RNY since there is
no malabsorbtion benefit. With either surgery, the pouch can and will
stretch..........how much is determined by the quantity of food ingested,
as well as liquid ingestion. My understanding is that carbonated beverages
can stretch the pouch considerably.
My PCP wasn't too enthusiastic about wls, either. I don't believe
they (PCP) are really kept abreast of the sucess of these surgeries and
they are the ones who treat the problems that may occur, down the road.
She mentioned kidney stones and weight gain, but in all the research I have
done, most of the problems could have happened with or without wls and
there was no proof to support the wls was the cause. Okay, gall bladder
problems can and do occur after this surgery for many, but I see that as a
hurdle, not a brick wall.
I perservered and did all that was required of me, by
Kaiser-Permanente. This included six months of nutrition counseling,
weight loss classes and gastric bypass classes. I have had a complete
health assessment, gall bladder ultrasound (to ascertain if the gall
bladder is healthy, now) a thyroid panel and the infamous mental health
evaluation. I am an informed patient and understands what this surgery
entails and some of the complications that may accompany it, and while I
wish it was done YESTERDAY, I am glad to have the knowledge on how to use
this tool sucessfully.
My suggestion to ANYONE seeking wls is to do your research! Read
everything you can find and wls support group and join. Join more than
one, even! Talk to people who have had the surgery. Unbeknownst to me, a
woman I have known for three years had the surgery almost five years ago
and her only regret is not having had it earlier in life.
Good luck to you and while getting into an argument with the PCP won't
help your case, you can inform the Dr. that you are not jumping into this
with blinders on and that you realize it is a TOOL, not the cure. Hope
this has been helpful and sorry for being so verbose!

No matter what doctor's say this is a "TOOL" as suggested. If
you go into this with the right idea about the surgery and options then you
will use it as that. There are those doctors who don't believe in the
surgery and that is their right, but for those of us who struggle/struggled
with weight loss know that it is a great "TOOL". Those who
succeed at this know what needs to be done to get where we want to be. The
people who don't succeed are those who have revereted to past behavior and
hurt their success and make us look bad. One rotten apple spoils the whole
barrel sort of mentality.

My cousins' doc told her (she had RNY) that HALF of those who have the
surgery gain it all back. Who knows??
I got the DS and it's got a great track record. Less gain, more lost, etc.
I wish you luck on whatever you choose as best for you!!!!
We're all in this together and we'll make it!!!
Hugs,
Tonya
