Question:
too much
I'm 9weeks post and ate a whole Wendy's chili for lunch and a Mcdonald's hamburger minus the bun for dinner yesterday is that too much? — PAULA B. (posted on August 6, 2002)

No, that sounds good to me. The hamburger minus the bun is a good choice
and the Wendy's chili is very low in fat. Keep up the good work! Marsha

I am pre-op, but, I would ask you why are you eating so much fast food?

Hi Paula, Protein, Protein, Protein!!!! I think you made excellent choices,
you threw away the bun, good for you! I'm almost one year post-op and have
done great. I always remember protein first, veggies next, and fruit if I
have room, and of course Vitamens. ((((HUGS))))

I could not have eaten a whole container of chili at 9 weeks or even now.
BUT it really depends on how liquidy the chili is as well as how much your
pouch will hold. The chili at my Wendy's is pretty substantial and I have
them add two scoops of cheese so it is a pretty thick concoction. Plus I
like a couple of crackers with mine, too. If it worries you, do the cottage
cheese test. That really put my mind at ease.<p>Heather--you will
have the occassion to eat out after surgery. Yes the hamburger is
"fast food" but it is protein (10 g) and pretty darn small.
Wendy's chili is just plain good food all the way around--high protein and
low fat and carbs. Add some cheese and you've got a nice hot meal with
plenty of protein AND vitamins from the tomatoes.

I am 6 weeks post op and also had the same concerns. I get mexican pizza
from taco bell and only can eat a quarter of it or if my family stops at
mcdonalds I eat a half a hamburger and take of the top bread and maybe 4
fries. My doc says that first your stomach is the size of a golf ball that
after swelling goes down over the weeks and months that it will be like a
lemon or orange. So I kinda visulize that and stop.

Paula, no thats not too much, but at this early stage, I would minimize the
eating out/fast food a little. Its OK occasionally, but remember what got
us in trouble in the first place. Try to eat at home more and just treat
yourself occasionally to fast food. I do so about once every 2 weeks or
so. But you've got the right idea-protein first!!

I am pre op ,but have read everything I can get a hold of on the diet. It
sounds like too much to me. Especially the hamburger, they say is very hard
to digest. It takes a long time to heal completely, I would be worried
about stretching the pouch ...Nancy P

I LIVED on Wendy's chili for a couple of months. I didn't like anything,
but that was one thing I saw a lot of people on here saying that they were
eating. So I tried it and , like I said, lived on it for a couple of
months. Now I don't even want to look at it! LOL But seriously, you made
good choices. 9 weeks post op being able to eat a whole container?? Seems
like a lot but like others have said, it's low in fat and high in protein.
Maybe try eating half of it and see if you are satisfied. A small Wendy's
chili has 15 grams of protein.

The point I was trying to make is that Fast Food is what has made so many
americans OBESE and has contributed to you and I being here to begin with.
Take the time and make some chili at home. Cook at big pot, but a small
amount into tuperware and freeze it. Anything home made is healthier than
fast food. Fast food has TREMENDOUS amounts of salt and preservatives.
They still aren't good for you. If you are gonna eat a fast food burger,
at least go to Burger King, the meat is Broiled not fried @ Wendys. Just
voicing my opinion.

An entire Wendy's small chili (8 oz) contains 200 calories (50 from fat -
which is good), 6g of fat, 21g of carbs and 17g of protein. It also
contains 870mg of sodium - which is almost 1/2 of what people should be
taking in a day (2g or 2000 mg).
<p>
However, if you make *2* meals out of the chili (or more if your pouch
can't handle 4oz of chili), then the sodium per meal is a little more
reasonable.
<p>
Heather, I understand what you are talking about in making the chili by
yourself at home, but some people like the convenience. Plus if you are
out with the family and they go to Wendy's, getting the chili is one of the
healthiest choices that you can make there - it is certainly the best food
at Wendy's in terms of protein.

I need to clarify something . At first I ate 1/2 of the chili, then 2
hours later I ate the other half. I have to eat every 2-3 hours or I get
sick. And as far as too much fast food, Heather, I hardly eat out but my
mother in law was in the hospital and I spent the day with her.I must be
doing something right because I've lost 49 ibs. And I do cook a lot at home
for my family but most of the time if I just taste things while I'm cooking
to season things I get sick from all the bending I do while cooking. That
was the fist chili and Mcdonals burger I have had post op.But I need 50
grams of protein per day and I can't stomach the protein drinks.
<<<<<HUGS>>>> to all of your helpful answers,
the post ops were what I needed to here from.

Hi Paula,
I think you made excellent choices! Keep up the good work. I am 6 weeks
post op and received a nutrional guide for certain fast food joints from
the nutritionist today and the 2 choices that you made were choices that
were recommended by on this fast food list.
Even the hamburger was an excellent choice, a cheeseburger would have been
worse. By the way, kudos to you for taking the bun off!
