I have Geisinger Health Plan and have just been approved within a month.
Before I even had a surgeon picked out I had my primary care physician send
in a letter of necessity based on my medical problems;diabetes, high
cholestorol, hypertension, sleep apnea and acid reflux, to the insurance.
The insurance then actually got in contact with the surgeon. I then needed
to have my doctor send in a letter showing that I tried to lose weight
under him for atleast 2 years without any success. Each insurance plan is
diferent as to what your employer wants covered. Some companies will make
sure that weight loss surgery for any reason is an exclusion. My former
insurance was through First Priority Blue Cross and they had that written
exclusion which made it impossilbe for me to get approved under them.
