Question:
I am 7 days out and am will need to be on liguids for another week. In the afternoon
until bedtime my stomach feels like I am hungry.I am probably getting only 75 calories a day and that is scarey. I'm afraid my body will shut down. — PAULA B. (posted on June 5, 2002)

My surgeon suggested drinking the liquid protein drinks like CarbAdvantage
or Atkins. If you could sip a couple of them throughout the day, it would
provide you with plenty of protein and more than 75 calories. Check with
your surgeon and see if it's an option for you.

When I was on liquids, I would drain the broth off of soups and drink that,
saving the rest for the family. Especially the chunky soups, they tasted
great, and made me feel like I was "eating " something. Campbells
french onion tasted great too.

On liquids, my dr allowed anything that could go thru a strainer. I pureed
chicken soup, made fruit smoothies, etc. You'd be surprised what will go
thru there! Also, I ate sf popsicles and sf/ff frozen yogurt bars. You are
right, you do need to be taking in SOMETHING! A couple of protein drinks I
could tolerate: CarbSolutions in cappuccino and chocolate and AdvantEdge in
strawberry and chocolate. How about no sugar added carnation instant
breakfast? My dr also allowed cream of wheat made according to the baby
recipe on the box--as long as it didn't stick to the spoon, I could have
it. Just because you are on liquids doesn't mean you can't get creative
with it. Just no chunks!

You could try some yougurt sf/ff or milk. How about some protein shakes?
Proteinex is nasty tasting but only 8 Tbls\day gives 60 gms of protein a
day. Beef broth, chicken broth. Maybe running a cream soup through a
blender and straining it. As always these are only sugestions before doing
anything call your DR. --- Good Luck

I agree with the other posters about yogurt, no sugar added Carnation
Instant Breakfast (if you can tolerate milk) and I would suggest trying V8
Juice. It's full of good nutrients and I lived on it while I was on
liquids. It's much more filling and satisfying that other liquids. It
must have worked because I lost 30 pounds in 12 days. I am now six months
post-op and have lost 166+ pounds.
Good luck.

I lived on SF Carnation Instant Breakfast, Light Yogurt and Cream of
Chicken soup when I first came home. It started of where I could only
handle a 1/2 a CIB or about a tablespoon of yogurt at a time. I always did
well with the soup though. I could easily get in a 1/4 cup at a time. I
think I tried the soup around day 10. I bought the condensed type and
added skim milk to it. Once you can start with cottage cheese, scrambled
eggs, etc you will notice a big difference in how long you stay full. Good
Luck!

I used and still use the Knox Nutra Joint drink. You mix it in 4-8oz of
water. It is sugar free, high in protein and tastes pretty good.
