Question:
Can anyone tolerate 50,000iu of Vitamin D?

My doctor recently put me on 50,000iu cap.because of low vitamin D levels.Has anyone been able to take this much and tolerate it?I am 9 years post op and tried to take different otc meds and could not take them.    — luvmytrucker51 (posted on September 11, 2010)

First, a couple questions-is this 50,000 once a week/or day/3 days etc? Second, I assume it is a prescription form in which case it is a D2 not a more desriable/absorbable D3. If it is 50000/week you would be better off getting 7-8000 a day from OTC caps or even liquid. Yes, this amount is tolerable, in fact some people are on 2x that amount weekly. But again, I would look to the D3 form and smaller doses daily. Hope this helps

I have a chronic deficiency of vitamin D and have several times been on 50,000iu/week for 8 weeks at a time. No side effects at all, and it did correct my deficiency. Trouble is, soon as I went on regular calcium and D,my levels dropped again. And this is PRE-OP!!!

Vitalady.com sells Vitalady Tender Dry Vitamin D3-50 which is 50,000IU, 100 caps/btl that a lot of people take daily. I bought some but was using up my other D3 supply before trying it. Are you familiar with the OSSG osteoporosis groups? They are very knowledgeable, but you have to send an e-mail request to join the online group: [email protected]. Good luck.

I'm taking 9000iu daily of sublinqual drops. I could never absorb the RX gel caps (which were super expensive to boot.) So I'm getting 63,000iu weekly. Just FYI, my bottle of Liquid D3 costs me $18.00 and lasts close to a year. I get it from my local compounding shop (they make it.)

I've never heard of taking 50,000 units. That doesn't mean it isn't correct, but check with your doctor. I take an additional 4,000 units of d3 daily. I believe I've heard at support group that if you are severely depleted then an IV would be the protocol.

I am 7 months post op with a severe vitamin D deficiency. I have to take the 50,000 units once per week in addition to 3 supplements each day. They do have a very small soft gel that is the 50,000 that is very easy to tolerate. I was also told by my doctor and nutritionists to spend 20 minutes outside in the sun each day with as much skin exposed and no sunscreen (unless on your face). This is the quickest way to increase your vitamin D level, also don't forget milk, it has a good supply of vitamin D. The bad thing is that it does go up slowly, my doctor said it will take a few months for your levels to show that the supplements are working. Take it slow, take it with food and I wish you the best luck.

Due to low vitamin D levels, the Doctor gave me a prescription for 50,000 IU that I took once per week. I didn't have any issues with this prescription.

No disrespected intended, but are you SURE you're supposed to take 50Kiu of Vit.D.? I was told by my doctor to take 1000iu daily. ( One small pill ). Again, no disrespect intended but you might want to check that again. Best of Luck to you. Ray

I also take the 50,000iu of vitamin D. My surgeon ordered it before surgery and i don't have any problems. I was also already on a low dose before because I had a parathyroid removed years back.

Yes, you can. I have been on 50,000 of vitamin D 4 times this year due to low vit. D levels, you take one pill once a week. Now depending on how low your vitamin D level is, they will either have you take it once a week for a month or once a week for a moth and a half to two months...there are no side effects and your body will tolerate it REMEMBER ITS IN NEED OF IT aside from you feeling much much better and NOT FEEL EXTREMELY COLD AND ACHING ALL OVER which its a reaction to your body having extremely low D levels in your body. I live in the north east and people that live in the eastern part of the country get less sun exposoure than the rest of the country hence the low vitamin D levels....not only that but if your a health conscious person like I am, every time you go out in the sun you use sunblock right?...well over use of sunblock will cause your vitamin D levels to do down..."your not allowing your body to soak in the sun that it needs to survive" isnt that funny, we are told to protect our skin from "over" exposure from the sun, but no body ever said anything about the fact that if we "over" block our bodies from it this also can cause us harm...lol you will be fine...I hope this helped send me a message and let me know. thanks

Yes this is a VERY COMMON problem. As you should know from your pre op meeting with your surgeon this would happen. You should have been perscribed this dose for 1 pill once a week for 8 weeks. I personaly am on the second round of this dose since April. My D levels went from 40 to 73 so that is great. BUT the trick is to take your calsium dose along with the vitimins to increase the effectivenese of the staying power in your system. And by the way... In the case that you do not know this tid bit... We in USA and Canada are ALL deficient in natural vitimin D as we stay out of the sun and do not have as much sunny days as the rest of the world. (According to my nurse /pratitioner)

It has been 6 years since my surgery, and I still do not have Vitamin absorbion. My surgeon said its just one of those things. My Internist just put me on Vit D 50000 one time a week. I haven't had any gastric distress from it.

I started taking 50,000 iu last April once a week. My doctor upped my dose to 50,000 iu 3 times a week before surgery I am 3months out and I still take 50,000 iu 3 times a week and 2000 iu daily and thankfully last week I got a letter stating that I am at a normal level but keep taking what I have been taking. I hope this helps.
