potato chips

Would it hurt to have a couple of plain potato chips everynow and then just to get rid of the craving?    — cuppaloopy (posted on March 27, 2010)

I have asked this question of you before..but never see an answer..so here I go again...Did you see a NUT? did your DR give you a diet to follow? Do you or did you attend any group meetings? I see all your post and all the questions from before surg..I do not undertand for the life of me why anyone would go thru the surg and not follow the diet for life! I went into this knowing it is a life changing event. I know MANY people told you the very same thing before surg. I have read all the posts. Please..find a group or NUT to chat with. I do wish you well..

I'm 9 months out from RNY and I've had potato chips 2-3, they do not taste the same to me as before surgery. So no craving. Now give me some baby carrots, yummy!!

I agree with Susan, give yourself permission to try a couple of potato chips now and then, and you'll probably find they're no longer nearly as fulfilling to you as eating the things that are good for you and cause you to lose weight. God bless!

This is to Julie. Yes my dietician and surgeon gave me all kinds of stuff. So what if I ask alot of questions. Maybe I just want to see what other dieticians and surgeons have to say because everyone says something different. Just for the record I was considered a lightweight meaning I only had about 50lbs. to lose. The main reason I had this surgery is because of health issues and to get off some of my medications. I also see nothing wrong with treating myself once in awhile. My weight loss is going very well. I am down 57lbs. since January. I would appreciate you not saying something everytime I ask a question. I think that is very rude. It should not concern you or anyone else what I ask. I wanted to set the record straight because I'm tired of people saying rude remarks to me so I will continue to ask questions when I want to. I thought this was suppose to be a friendly group.

Way to go on that one. I know my Doctor told me if I can get it in and it stays down then go for it. I know my limits and never go beyond it. I am three months out and have lost over 60 pounds and my doctor told me I am doing great. I follow a great diet plan but every once in awhile I want some thing different and I have had three or four baked chips with a half a whole wheat turkey sandwich. I asked it it was ok that I did this and was told as long as I am not sitting and eating the bag then sure it would be fine every once in awhile. You are so right that all doctors do things different. So,you go girl and ask all your questions on here. That is what this is for I thought..

Everyone here has to travel their own path, find the way for their own journey. I can eat anything, just don't want to. My tastes have changed, if I eat the wrong food, or eat even the right foods wrongly, it is it's own punishment...and it hurts. You must find your own limits, your own tolerances, and your own path. I can't eat peanut butter, waffles, biscuits (American, not crackers or cookies) really fatty stuff, or too much milk, etc...but I can tear up a saucer full of hot, spicy, food, and coffee that would dissolve concrete, sugar, fried foods, etc. I seldom do, but I can, just don't want it. Things I used to crave like a drug, I don't even like now. Foods I never liked before are like manna from Heaven, so everyone is different. If you try to follow all the rules of every doctor or Nut or the opinions of every poster here, you'd better have a lot of capacity, and you probably will never be able to eat anything, because someone, somewhere won't like you eating it. It's your body, and you've made one hell of an investment by having this surgery. Only YOU can access the value of it for you, and only YOU control what you decide to put into your body. Good luck on your journey, and eat healthy, but don't feel so deprived you give up. Remember, if you keep on looking at the past, you will soon be heading in that direction. God bless and have faith, it was worth it.

Hi Barbara, I can't tell you if potato chips would hurt you or not. I think that has to be a decision you make for yourself with the advice of your doctor/NUT. Keep in mind that the more you eat of fried, fat filled food, the more you crave. What about this.....ask yourself if you feel you will have enough control to put the bag down after you've had the 2 or 3 chips. I'm about 4 1/2 months out from RNY and can eat ANYTHING! I'm not sure I could put the bag down at this stage. I have to keep reminding myself that eating chips, cookies, and other foods in the "junk" category STARTED in small amounts but graduated quickly to larger amounts which put me in the situation I was in before I had my surgery. Remember you can stretch your pouch! I weighed 365 lbs! I've lost 143 lbs and feeling great. Now only have about 77 more to go to reach my goal. At 56 years old I'm now off of all blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol medications due to weight loss and exercise and of course the surgery. I do on occasion have a "treat" but only on holidays. As others have posted to you, those kind of foods just don't seem to have the pull they had before my surgery. Who knows, maybe if you try it again you'll find the same will be true for you! Just don't lose focus on how far you've already come. 57 lbs is super terrific!! But it could be easy to gain back. God's speed in the decisions you make for yourself. My prayers are with you as they are with all who struggle with weight loss.

I have to agree with Susan, why would you want to start bad habits. We all has MAJOR LIFE changing surgery and to go back to bad habits, I do not know. I am below goal and I still do not eat bad foods, my thought is, if I am suffering with all these woes I am having why eat wrong?? I am having a rough time of it, eating. My two cents.

I really think Julie was trying to be helpful like I am, I just suffer so much with so many problems with RNY, I could kick myself in the patoot for getting to the weight I did so I had to have this major surgery. Dusty your advice was so right too!

As much as you think you are craving the chips it may be that you are just craving something crunchy/salty. There are a lot of crackers (lower fat) that may alleviate that urge to eat chips. I love the special K crackers. I have had chips since my surgery a year ago, but LAYS was right..you can't eat just one! I even went so far as to put a few in a very small bowl, but low and behold..I was able to refill the bowl..LOL The only way a chip is safe in my presence is if I leave them at the grocery store. Good luck Kimberly

I,also, was berated for my question in the past. Everyone cheats at some time or another. I admit it, the holier than thou don't. I think there is nothing wrong with eating a few chips or anything else that you would like. The only problem is that it is impossible to stop. I have lost 59lbs. since Sept.2009 with a gastric sleeve. I have gained 5 lbs. because I have been adding fattening foods. I am sending you positive energy.

In the past I have read this woman's questions many times and have wondered who the hell is doing her surgery and whether or not she is paying someone under the table in some shed to do the surgery. It's not about whether or not she's trying to see what everyone elses' responses are, it's more of a concern from people that she has not been getting proper care. Some of the questions that have been asked in the past are the most basic things one should know before even going into surgery and what you should know post-op. If you already know what you are supposed to be doing, then say it for darned sakes. If you are looking for opinions on what everyone else is doing, say it. It's perfectly ok to get others opinions on what they are doing, but when you ask questions like you have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about, it comes across as a serious care related issue. There is support here, people have pointed you out to the various message boards where you will get even more help and opinions, yet I never see you post there. And to answer your original question, to me it's just fine to have some things in moderation. Most dietitians will not OK any potato chips, but refraining from having them at all can lead to binge eating of them in the future. A handful every now and then will not hinder weight loss. I am losing weight just fine and I do have treats now and then when I can.

Barb, As you can see there are alot of people conserned about your weird posting and conserned for your bad choices. I have to say that I to am shocked at some of your postings. Some seem to be alot of misinformation that you seem to be not asking your doctors. As for the Chip thing. Let me explain something to you here.Perhaps to help remind you of the way to eat . You should be eating your protein first and then your veg and then carbs. Remember Carbs turn into sugar i mediatly in your body and go into storage. They are not readily used. You are eating samller amounts to allow your body to use the stored energy that you have been accumulating for years. I know that you know this but you chose o have the surgery and you were well inform ed in advance that the surgery was a tool not the answer the diet and lifestyle is the answers to loosing and keeping off the weight. So having said that I encourage you to stay away from the carbs and sugars and fats. Treat them as poison because that is what they are to your body. If you eat "White, refined"carbs this will cause a spike in your insulin, triggering your body to crave sugar and lots of it. Hence the chips being a carb and loaded with fat will cause you to want to eat more than you really intended to eat. How about trying when you get a craving to eat something with protein. That way you will e fuller and if you really crave the salty then have peanut butter . I hope that this will help you.

First of all thanks to the people that understood my questions. For the people that don't let me tell you something. I had one of the top knotch surgeons and one of the best hospitals. They also gave me all the information I needed. I am curios as to what other people have to say. I don't appreciate some of you's saying that I do not understand this surgery. I am going to REPEAT this again. I had this surgery to get off some of my medication. I only had around 50lbs.to lose. Instead of some of you putting me down your suppose to help me with the information. So if you can't post something nice then don't post anything at all. I do not need or want your information.

Barb, I think you're taking this much too personally. I know when I read some of your questions I was kind of astounded that the program you went through did not educate you better. You never explained that you were looking for other information. Everyone here has your best interest at heart - it just sounds like you're wanting to find someone who will tell you what you want to hear - not necessari;y what's good for you. You've lost 57 pounds which is great! Don't ruin the beautiful new you simply for some potato chips!

Okay guys I am going to say this one more time. I have all the IFORMATION I NEED. I was curious as to what other people have to say. I like to see what their surgeons and nuts. say because each one says something different. Isn't that what this board is suppose to be for to ask questions. I do take it personally when people put down my surgeon who is one of the best bariatric surgeons there is. This is the last time I am going to post an answer to people who are just plain rude and by all means not helping me at all.

My NUT has told me that whenever I have craving for chips by the sunchips - it is definetly low in fat and make yourself little baggies. Chips for me are addictive so I just have a little sunchips or whole grain something to take away the urge like crackers, fiber one bar something that is not as greasy, fried foods.

I allow myself to have a small treat on Sundays and i really measure and split with my daughter. Sometimes its a small cup of ice-cream or pudding. the rest of the week i am very strict to stick by my protien shakes, broiled chicken or fish with steamed veggies. I work out every other day for at least 40 minutes This has worked for me so far.

Hey Barb, great job on the weight loss, you are doing great. Here is what my nut told me. As long as I have all my protein in she doesn't have a problem with us having a snack as long as we make it low fat. ie low fat crackers, chips etc. We are still supposed to keep that in side our allowed calories per day. I think she said it should be below 3 grams of fat per serving. She also said we can treat ourselves a couple of times a month with something special. She said to plan it for a certain day. This is of course for people who have gotten to their goal or close to it. Hope this helps hon. Peggy

Barbara, Let's get real here...everyone acts like it is a sin to have a craving. Just have a few, no big deal. you will NOT go back to your old ways. I have lost 140lbs so far and never feel deprived. It takes time to change a food lifestyle. Keep strong... and just be you. That's the only happiness you will find. : )
