Question:
always feeling like I'm going to throw up. 8 days out of surgery

Is it normal to feel so sick? Just last night my doctor ordered me some meds for it, but it's still there, just not as bad. I'd like to know if this is normal and how long will it last?    — roeroe7 (posted on October 20, 2009)

I didn't feel like throwing up post surgery, you are doing the correct thing by seeing your Dr. Good luck!

Talk to your surgeon, and his nutritionist (or one that counsels bariatric patients). If you are on a liquid diet, what things have you tried so far? Make sure to keep a food log that records what you ate, and how you felt afterward. Bring this with you when you talk with the surgeon/dietitian. If they suggest protein shakes, are you using ones from the local store, are are you ordering something from a company that makes products specifically for bariatric patients? An example would be BariatricChoice.com. Hang in there, the first few weeks of liquid and soft foods will soon pass, and as your body recovers from the surgery, you'll be able to eventually add more normal foods back into your diet. Before you know it, you'll be eating tasty, healthy meals, be full of energy, and be loosing weight. You'll be so excited you will hardly be able to contain yourself. Best wishes, and God Bless.

If you are always feeling like you are going to throw up you are probably drinking your liquids too fast. YOu should still be on full liquids. You should be able to see through them. Take small sips, and not too fast. Don't use a straw either. That will cause too much air in your stomach. Do sip slow and about every 5 minutes. Use a minute timer to remind you. Try this, and you will feel better in no time.

I had bypass on October 20th, and today is my first full day home. I too am having difficulty with getting in the 60 ounces of required liquids. I feel full, sometimes to the point that more liquid will cause me to vomit and I have the sensation of a bubble being up in my chest. The Clinic told me not to drink as fast; sip only and to stand up and walk around more. So far it has not made much difference. I'm going to try to get in as much fluid as I can but if I can't make the 60 ounces I'm not going to push it now either because of the discomfort.
