Question:
Do post-op RYN patients need to wear medic-alert bracelets?
Awhile back, I read a post from a post-op RNY patient who was involved in a car wreak. While at the emergency room she experienced a horrible dumping episode when she received an injection. Do post-op RNY patients need to wear medic alert bracelets? — dasie (posted on October 2, 2009)

yes it needs to say no NG TUBE, NO NSAID DR. NAME AND PHONE NUMBER. IF YOUR
IN A CAR WRECK AND CANT TALK FIRST THING THEY WILL DO IS A NG TUBE WHICH
WILL DAMAGE YOUR POUCH!!!

I agree about the medic alert bracelet saying "No NG tube." I
don't wear mine (maybe I should), but rather carry it in my wallet.

I do alot of driving... therefore I wear one. No one ever said what
information was needed on it. I just have Lap RNY on it. I guess I should
have it updated with the no ng tube and Drs. name.

Shouldn't the note on the bracelet read "No blind NG tube"? RNY
patients can have an NG tube as long as they use a scope to aid in its
placement. At least that's what I've been told, it's been six months since
my surgery and I still haven't bought mine.

I know about 20 people who have had RNY (myself included) and none of us
wear or have the medic alert bracelet. I think they are a good idea
though.

I am 10 months out and wear one that is a dog tag style necklace. I got
mine on Ebay - 5.99 I think. They come in several different colors. On the
front it has my name and Gastric Bypass. The back has No blind NG Tube, No
NSaids/No Sugars, my surgeons name and phone number, and ICE (in case of
emergency) and that persons phone number.

I wear one... the front has my "ICE" (in case of emergency) info
on it - my partner's name and number and my daughter's name and number.
The back has "RNY Gastric Bypass 3/2/09" and "No NG Tube/No
NSIADS/No Naprosyn (because I'm deathly allergic to it). The last two
lines have my PCP's name and phone number and my surgeon's name and phone
number. I wear it all the time, and have even made beaded bracelets and
matching earrings to go with all my outfits, so that I'm color-coordinated.
I know, sounds silly, but at least it looks nice, and because I wear the
medic alert part to the underside of my wrist, no one can tell I'm wearing
anything other than a pretty bracelet.

I figure better safe than sorry. I've known too many people that have had
accidents for me to not protect myself and those I love. So last Christmas
I made a production out of it-- picked out stylish bracelets on a website
and gave them as presents to my parents (both diabetic w/ high blood
pressure), my sister, and myself. My sis and I have the same allergies and
were 2 wks apart in surgery so both of ours read (in all caps)
"Gastric Bypass 10/08, No NG Tube/Nsaids, No Cillins/Morphine"
then list our ICE number. Wanted to specify no blind ng tube, but there
wasn't enough room w/ everything else.
