Question:
about to eat myself to death
ok since I made the final decision to have RNY I am about to eat myself to death. I have always over eaten, but it is even worse now. Someone please tell me this is normal. I feel I will be a compliant patient with pre op diet and all, but trying to get some splurging in before the eating like a HOG (literally) is all cut out. — buggyboot (posted on March 23, 2009)

I know what you mean about wanting that last fling with food. My Dr. was
very strict and he said I had to lose 7 lbs before surgery. He was very
adamant about not doing the surgery if I gained weight. I sure hope that
you have a Dr. who doesn't care if you gain before surgery. It is the
liver that the Dr. wanted to shrink in order for him to move it out of his
way. If you can keep the end results in mind, that might help you. Good
luck. Susan

I had many "last suppers" but then someone told me that if I
gained weight my doctor would not do my RNY. Getting a new life was more
important than food. Within reason, there is no reason why you can't have
some of your favorite foods...a little, someday! Focus on the most
important thing right now and proceed on that path! Your choice:)

So far there has been no mention of me gaining before surgery. I was told 2
weeks prior to surgery I must go on Atkins type diet...high protein low
carb diet, and that not even one cheat is allowed. Other than 2 weeks pre
op nothing was mentioned. I meet with nutritionist and psych soon, maybe
they can shed some light on it.

I can totally relate to this. I made the decision to have surgery in late
December and have amazingly somehow lost about 9 lbs. but have been eating
like crazy....buffets, chocolate, donuts, chinese, burgers, an all out
eating fest. I am scared I will miss my food so much and am about to talk
myself out of the surgery. Please if there is anyone out there who has had
the surgery and felt like this prior to, please respond to what your life
is like now postop. I have about 2 lbs. to go before i have lost my five
percent and can meet with the surgeon and am considering lap band..if I
dont eat myself to death first. Scared. Also, what is it like with cokes
after surgery. I love my cokes and fear I will never be able to have
another.

I did the same thing with food before my surgery last summer. I ate until
I literally felt sick. I didn't even taste what I was eating, but I think
I was scare to let go of the food. My doc didn't require me to loose a
certain amount before surgery, but did require me to go on a special diet
two weeks prior to surgery. Since that day I started that two week special
diet I have never looked back, but did miss my food a little bit at first.
Now, I have lost 100 pounds, and I never want to go back to making myself
sick with food. I was a diet coke finatic before surgery, and now I hardly
think about it. I hope you make a decision that could save your life.
It's much better here on the other side. Good luck!

Same deal here. I sat around and thought about all the food I wanted to
eat just one last time. Between the time I met with my doctor the first
time and when I started my 2 week pre-op diet I gained 15 pounds. This
period was about a month and a half. So, don't feel alone. I think the
majority of us do it. I started my pre-op diet last week, have one week to
go, then off to surgery on the 30th. Good Luck to you. All will turn out
well for both of us.

WOW! I am glad to see that I am not the only one that has been struggling
with this. I had my consult in November and was told to lose at least 25
pounds. I have lost 5 pounds and my surgery is in 5 weeks. I have been
eating my "last meal" quite often and have not really even
attempted to lose weight until now. I know for me that it is like having to
let go of my best friend. Because that is exactly what food has been for
me most of my life. Now that I am down to where the rubber meets the road I
am finally focused, but it is hard and I just hope and pray that the 25
pounds are off prior to seeing my surgeon in 4 weeks. I am doing 1000
calories a day and it bites, but it is do or die for me and I have to do
this. It makes me ill and ashamed to think that I could have had at least
50 pounds off by now, but this is all a part of the obesity merry-go-round
and soon I hope to finally get off because I have rode the ride long
enough. Good luck. Focus and make it happen.

I did a lot of last meal splurges, also. It is very tempting. But, as
several people have said, you have to be very careful. I gained 15 pounds
before my preop appointment with the surgeon. Fortunately for me, a lot of
it was actually water weight. But, he did hint at postponing the surgery
until the weight was all gone, plus more. Luckily, I told him that he
didn't have to worry, and I would get all the weight off, and he agreed.
Ten pounds of it was gone in three days, and then I lost the other 5 over
the next few weeks. I lost five more doing the required atkins diet two
weeks before the surgery. So, please, please be careful...It is natural to
want to splurge, but if you gain, your doctor will most likely postpone your
surgery. This won't be the last time you will ever get to eat the foods you
like, I promise.

I had to reply becaue this hit so close to home! After I was approved and
got my date, I went bananas! I ate like there was no tomorrow up until my
pre op requirement liquid diet! It worked great for me. I seemed to take
care of the worry about not eating what I wanted ever again and was still
able to adhere to the pre op and post op diets. I am glad I enjoyed all
the food before and am even more happy to have lost 62 lbs since my 2/5/09
RNY by sticking to my diet! I had my cake and I ate it too

Thank God my Dr did not have any rules about weight gain before... I ate
so much I could have feed a small nation.... But when it came time to do
my 2 week pre-op diet I was very stict on myself and I have done great....
Don't beat yourself up. It is a psychological thing like a last goodbye or
a bachlor party saying goodbye to old habits and lifestyles.

Fear drives many to eat. Food has been a source of comfort and you feel you
are going to lose it. The surgery will allow you to lose weight but you
need to seek counseling to deal with the issues you have with food to help
defeat the head hunger that will remain.
You will see many post here of people who are losing weight but struggle
with feelings of lose because they miss their favorite foods. It is hard
sometimes. You have to decide you are worth it and put your mind to saving
your life.

My Nut told us all that "Last Suppers" are QUITE common...I had
my last supper out for an early dinner the night before surgery at a
gourmet restaurant! She did warn against it, but didn't stress about it all
that hard either! Right or wrong...I thought it was going to be the last
time I would enjoy a meal...I was SOOOO wrong...After a year, you can eat
like a regular small person. You won't be able to FINISH a large meal, but
you will be able to eat! I thought that chewing my food death and eating
small meals would mean sacrifice...CONTRARY!!!! I totally enjoy healthy
food only I eat 1/2 or even less now...and I skip the bread/butter most
times as well. This is not the end of eating! It's the end of eating like
a "hog"! LOL I ate out at a famous steak house the other
night...I ordered a 6 ounce teriyaki steak ...a sweet potatoe with butter
and cinnamon (no brown sugar) and a side salad w/vinegarette dressing...I
ate the entire salad with my meal and not before my meal...(the enzymes
help break down the meat...so I want it on top of my protein and not
first...might as well put my food to good use! ) I ate about half the
steak...half the baked sweet potato...and all of my salad...Got my unsweet
tea in a TO GO cup and drank it 30 mins later, after walking around a dept
store (mostly for exercise after dinner). Before surgery...I would have
ordered a 12-16 oz steak...got a loaded potato, ate two loaves of bread...a
salad and a veggie and might finish whatever was left off my families
plates! Drink 2-3 glasses of sweetened drinks. (Piggie!) And eat dessert
and a big greasy fried appetizer as well! Don't need all that...and don't
want it or even miss it!! You'll see! It is normal to feel the need to get
in all you can before surgery...I do not believe it dictates failure
later...I am doing just fine and felt the SAME way you are! Hugs!

It is totally normal to feel that way and I did some last supper type
eating (mainly of my trigger foods that I will have to severly limit in the
future, french fries, pizza, long john silvers fried fish.) My surgeon was
clear that he wanted me to lose some weight, start the high protein, low
carb style of eating to get in practice and start exercising. He dangled
the carrot of an easier surgery, less tension on the anastomosis and
therefore less chance of a drain, and quicker recovery time. That convinced
me not to be doing too much of the last supper eating and I lost 22 pounds
pre-op and had a very easy post of course. I'm just starting eating soft
foods, and I am already back to the level of aerobic exercise I was pre-op
(mainly very slow). It has been worth it. You are totally normal and it
will not mess you up, but it was easier for me in surgery to have minimized
how much last suppering I did. Good luck with every thing. Kevin

I understand where u r comming from
Their comes a time where we must become strong and decide what we really
want
I know I am a recovering addict and I needed to make the choice to become
clean the same with food its time to make the decision not saying not to
have the last meal but its time to become strong and continue to move on
we need to start sometime
I had some of my favorite meals and then when I decided to get movin I knew
it was too important and i did it for myself I wish u the best tammi

HI Michelle, it is so very hard for us to give up food.I am on the journey
preop and at first it was difficult for me to not eat eat eat, so I really
do know what you mean. but for me, it became a mind set. since dec. i have
lost 25 pounds and it has not been easy. As the days go by though, i have
been able to psych myself out with food. i gradually gave up my sweat tea-
that was so so very hard for me, more difficult then some of the foods. but
i have become an addict for crystal light - never saw that one coming! then
as i really watched my portion control, i find i actually get full and
again that mind set has finally kicked in for me- when i finally feal full
i push my plate away. MY husband, bless his heart- has never had a weight
problem so i quickly give him my plate and he finishes the food.If i don't
give the plate away i will eat it ! Anyway, hang in there and try hard to
at least begin watching what you eat. OH and my Nut rec journaling now,
that has really helped me too, and i don't cheat with what i write down,
even if it is bad, i write it down.At first my journal, well Not so good at
first! but now it is better and very few poor choices. try at first to
just do some portion control and if you still feel like you need to eat
things which are not that good, then if you just watch your portion, then
eventually you will get full if you eat too much and then you can begin
cutting some of the poorer choices out. It will happen and you will be so
glad that you are on this journey. Wishing you blessings and hugs.Best of
luck on your journey! Cora

not to be judgemental, but if you have a feling that you will never eat
again you will gain weight by trying to get all the food now. My daughter
and i both had WLS and she had the same feeling and gained 32lbs. Think
that you will eat again and it will be like a full thanksgiving dinner but
it will be a small protion. I eat 1 container of yogurt and feel like i ate
the whole turkey. Just change your mind set and dont overeat. You can do
it!!! i am 2bethin62 on OH web look me up if you need a friend
