Question:
Does anyone have any protein ideas?
I had RNY on January 8, 2009. I am doing great and have lost about 35 pounds. I am having trouble with my protein. I have been using Nector from Bariatric Advantage and it was working great, but now it is making me gag. Anyone have any suggestions? Mix tasteless protien powder into everything you eat or drink.

What you like and what taste good will continue to change. You will need to
keep trying new things. Add whey powder to your food. Or if you tolerate it
drink more milk. Great source of protien also is beans. Try to get as much
of your protien from real food as you can. Read the labels.

You may be developing lactose intolerance. That's what happened to me...I
used to LOVE Nectar..I can't even smell it anymore without gagging...Even 5
years later! YUCK! Try a whey isolate or a whey-soy isolate blend. I
suggest trying samples to see how you like them (or they like you!) I had
to eat my protein in real food and used One Isopure bottled protein daily.
It's clear and was easier to digest and has no weird monkey butt smell.
(sorry for the graphics!) After 3 months I stopped using protein
supplements altogether and ate like a regular person with three main meals
of mostly protein and 3 small snacks or meals as well...(For me:
"Meals" are balanced and include mainly protein....
"Snacks" do not always have protein)...5 years later I use EAS
blend of Whey and Soy Isolate from Costco...I only just added it to my diet
last year at year 4, to skip a carby breakfast, which left me hungry more
often than not with in an hour or so and all day long it seemed...So having
a protein drink in my coffee cut some 200-400 calories from my morning
breakfast and coffee! It was worth it for me since I had gained 10
pounds...I lost it all and now continue to maintain that loss after 5 years
with a protein breakfast EVERY SINGLE DAY!
But protein is a personal taste and tolerance....You really have to find
quality "isolates" for lactose or achy problems with whey...That
helps a lot! It takes that cheesy, stink out too! YUCK! I'm gagging just
thinkig about it! LOL My other problem with theseprotein drinks is the
artifical sweeteners they use...Some isolates will give me a belly ache and
dumping just from the sweetener...SO, test out samples if you can find
them...many Vitamin places have samples or if you find one you are
interested in, you can often go to the main website and order samples
directly from the manufacturer! Some even have free samples! You just
have to ask and look around! Good luck!

Start your day with a protein shake, or a yogart mixed with unflavored
protein. That will give you a great start with at least 30 grams of
protein. At the end of the day if I know I didn't have enough protein I
end my night with a sugar free pudding (jello is the best brand) again
adding unflavored protein. Also, light or low fat cheese sticks are a
great low calorie high protein snack. Have a stick with a few crackers and
you'll fit in another 10 grams of protein.

Try getting your protein from food. Perhaps yogurt if you can digest it.
Or milk as another poster suggested. If that doesn't work talk to a
nutritionist or dietician for suggestions. Good Luck and God Bless,

I also couldn't tolerate most of the protein products out there. I'm
lactose intolerant, so drinking more milk was out of the question. What
has worked for me are the New Whey Protein Bullets. I order them from GNC.
They have 42 grams of protein. I mix a grape one with diet cran-grape
juice diluted with some water. It tastes great. The fruit punch flavor is
good with fruit punch Crystal Light. You're too soon out from surgery to
be able to get what you need from food. My nutritionist approved my use of
the bullets, and advised that I add a little cheese or other protein like
that to my meals. I sprinkle a little low fat cheese on things like beans,
eggs, mix it in chicken salad, etc. You might ask your nutritionist about
the bullets. Like I said, mine okayed them - that is at St. Vincent's,
Carmel, Center of Excellence. Good luck and come visit us on the Indiana
forum!

I tried many different protein powders and couldn't tolerate them. I get as
much protein as I can from food but can't eat enough at this point to get
it all in. I found the zero carb Isopure at GNC. It is a 20 oz glass bottle
and has 40 grams of protein. It is a quality whey isolate protein. It has
no fat and no carbs, just protein. There are several different flavors. I
drink the icy orange. Looks and tastes like an orange soda pop. the protein
bullets that some have recommended is mostly a collagen protein and my nut.
doesn't approve of them. Hope this helps.

Hello!
I had RNY on 12/9/08 and have been using UNJURY, available only on the web.
They mix well, and they do not have an after taste. I started using it
pre-op when my NUT brought it for us to sample at a support meting and I've
been hooked ever since. They have a variety of flavors that can be mixed
with food, water of milk. They give you the maximum amount of protien that
you body can absorb at one time; which is about 30 grams of protien when
you mix it with milk. They also have sample size packets that you can
order. My NUT also told me to try and get all my protien from food, but
that is going to take a bit more time seeing how I am not taking in much
food yet, so she said it is okay to supplement my diet with protein drinks.
As others have alread mentioned, check into your high protien foods:
cottage cheese, greek yogurt, and beans have all become a staple in my
diet.
Good Luck! LisaRae

I have two ideas. My surgeon sugested Benefiber which is tasteless and can
be added to anything. It is made by Nestle and can be ordered online. My
dietician suggested adding nonfat milk powder. It is cheaper and makes
foods more creamy. Good luck. I like both options depending on what I am
eating.

Hi Judy, You might want to try Greek yogurt which can be found near the
regular yogurts in he dairy section. Greek yogurt has more than double the
protein and just a fraction of the carbs and sugars that traditional yogurt
has. I like to buy the plain variety (Fage 0% is my favorite) and I use low
sugar preserves, lemon curd, or honey to lightly sweeten it. Cottage cheese
is also good for protein if you are able to eat that. Best of life to you!
