Oh bless your heart. I am having my surgery in a couple of weeks, but i have a friend that got pregnant a few months after gastric bypass. It is not so much a danger to the baby, as it is to your health. What was your starting weight, and how much have you lost so far. My friend was well over 400 pounds and was 4 months out of her surgery and was down 100 pounds. I would call your doctor asap and see what can be done. Best of luck to you and you will be in my prayers.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on the blessing! Secondly, go straight to your doctor and share the news with them. You can get emotional support from your friends here at OH but your physical support must come from your doctor. Best of wishes!

Also, check out the post-op pregnancy board.....there are plenty of women over there who are pregnant/who have had a baby after WLS. Good luck and congrats! What an exciting time, although, I understand the "timing" isn't what you would want, but you will get through and do wonderfully! Talk to your Dr and do as they suggest! Take care!

Oh boy, I guess your surgeon's office didn't warn you about the potential of getting pregnant easily after surgery huh? With your hormones in flux and your rapid weight loss, it happens more often than you'd think. I guess congratulations are in order... I believe everthing happens for a reason. There is a pregnancy area on this OH site, I suggest you begin to check it out and bond with a few of the women there and learn how to come through this the best possible. Call your surgeon today, call your OBGYN today and work out the details of how to get the proper nutrition so the both of you can be healthy and happy. After you have the baby, you can get back to work on your weight loss efforts. Most women don't gain a lot during pregnancy so maybe it won't be as bad as you think. Congratulations and the best of luck to you, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

My surgeon stresses that it's extremely easy to get pregnant in the early months past surgery. He tells everyone that two forms of birth control should be use. It's not very heathy for the fetus in the first few months as a post op, as your nutritional intake is vastly different than normal. Pregnancy at 2+ years is possible, so that you wt loss journey is not affected at all. If you're telling us you were not aware of this possiblity, then either your surgeon is not doing his job correctly in his pre op consults or that you neglected to listen well. You'll have to consult the sureon and the doctor that will help with your baby's development to figure out the best course of action over the next few months. I'm truly sorry your wt loss journey has been sidelined at this time, but than again, it may be a "happy time" for you if you've looked forward to a child. DAVE

At least you had 3 months, a friend of mine was either 1 week pregnant at her surgery or got pregnant 1 week after.... You need to take care of both you and baby, and talk to both your surgeon and OB-GYN. Congrats!

Hi Stephanie, I too found out I was expecting after WLS.I have a healthy 5 month old baby girl, she is a unexpected blessing in our life that w/o WLS would have never happened. My advice would be to have a good support system, emotionally & physically.Talk w/ your friends, family WLS Dr & OBGYN. Continue to care for yourself & your baby thru your daily diet, vitiamins & excercise. ****PROTEIN & WATER**** Just a word of encourgment even w/ my pregnancy I lost 130lbs in 15 months. I am here if you need/want to talk. God Bless, ABBY

I have not had surgery yet, but when I was pregnant last year, I was really watching my nutrition and began losing weight because I was eating healthful for the first time in a long time. Concerned about the weightloss while pregnant, I asked my OB-GYN about weightloss during pregnancy, and she said there is nothing about weightloss that is dangerous to the fetus as long as I am getting the proper nutrition. It was at that time she told me she had a patient who had recently had gastric bypass and was pregant, and everything went just fine. Mom continued to lose weight, and baby was healthy. This may be a double blessing for you -- a new baby and a pregnancy that doesn't involve gaining 60+ pounds. Best wishes to you!
