Question:
What can I do to stop formation of uric acid kidney stones?
I am 5 years post-op. Kidney stones started last year. I am drinking 64oz. of water and lemon juice. Last year I had 3 lithotripsies. Now the stones are worse. I know protein is a cause. — haw (posted on February 13, 2008)

I transcribe for a group of urologists and I can just tell you what I know
they do for patients. I also have something called polycystic kidney
disease and pay really close attention to all of these things. The higher
incidence of stone formation in bypass patients is exactly the reason I had
a Lap-Band instead. Needless to say, the lemon juice is a good thing.
They always tell patients to drink natural lemonade as much as possible
because the citric acid will help break the stones down. This of course
will only work slowly over a period of time. If to stones are really bad,
I would think they would put you on allopurinol. This is a drug that is
used to help patients with gout (where the uric acid settles into your
joints) and uric acid nephrolithiasis. I'm assuming that you know they are
uric acid based on stone analysis. Do you know if some of your stones are
also calcium oxalate as well?

I started for form some stones and my doctor had me also take lemmon water
and increase my minimum water to 100 oz per day. It seems to resolved the
problem for me.

This is just what I know, @ 64 ounces that's not enough. You should shoot
for 100 ounces each day. The more water you drink the more it cleanses
your system. And beware of Allopurinol. I had gouty arthritis in my knee
before wls, and it caused my all over body edema (uncomfortable swelling
from head to toe every single day) to get VERY bad and I became extremely
depressed. Thank God that gout went away 2 weeks after wls along with the
medicine's I was taking. The more natural stuff you can try the better!
Good luck and God bless!

ARe you taking calcium "citrate" not "carbonate". The
carbonate does a number on you to cause stones. Citrate works better is
what I have been told.

Thank you! Thank you! I want to thank all who responded to my question! I
have increased the water to 100fl.oz. and stopped using the protein powder.
I have been on Allopurinol for over a year and am using calcium citrate.
Lithotripsy will be scheduled once my blood clotting factor is in the
normal range. Now I can do somethings that may help. Thank you again and
God Bless!

Has your Urologist analysed your stones. When pt's get reoccuring stones
they may have you strain your urine to catch them. Once analysed they may
know what is the best way to help prevent them

I feel your pain, believe me when I say that since I too have problems with
the kidney stones. I just had a lithotripsie a few weeks ago. Since he
saw something on the x-ray he is wondering if I have more or have not
passed all of them. Once that is all clear I get the 24 hour urine
collection and if that comes back alright then he is going to start me on
meds. You have to be totally stone free. The urologist told me that it
doesn't take it all away but if you get one a year it seems to move that to
5 years. I told him I would take that since this is my 2nd one in less than
a year. My doctor just keeps telling me to drink and drink. I keep trying
but it is hard. I am going to put the lemon in it, maybe that will help me.
Thanks for posting this. It has helped me a lot too.

I would love to talk about your diet with you, what you are eating/
drinking on a regular basis. There are many causes of kidney stones, one
being foods high in oxalates and non-absrobable calcium or protein, or
certain drinks, etc. If you want to look at the specifics, please feel free
to email me at [email protected], you need to have a good source of protein
and calcium and you don't always get the best from certain food sources!

I am one year out and within two weeks out from surgery I started getting
and passing stones. I had a total of sixteen in four weeks....very painful.
I stopped taking my calcium citrate and drank more water and the stones
stopped. I only drink about sixty ounces a day so it is not just the water
increase that helped. The doctors were shocked at how fast they formed and
stopped after I stopped the calcium. I get calcium from my food now and
doing great...stone free.
