Question:
Has anyone experienced severe constipation after there wls
I'm a bandster but prior to surgery I was regular. Now i'm always constipated has this happened to you? Is this a result of surgery and when will it go away? — bchicks42 (posted on January 22, 2008)

I am post RNY (8/29/07) and YES, it is terrible! I have to take stool
softeners regularly or else I am in pain and going to the bathroom is next
to impossible. I never had this prior to having my surgery. Good Luck!

Are you drinking enough water? Also are you taking in 25g of fiber a day?
If not, I suggest taking Fibersure everyday or some metamucil. It won't go
away. Its one of the "side effects" of weight loss surgery if you
aren't taking in enough water or fiber.

Most RNY post op patients I know live on a daily regimine of stool
softeners to make things "easier". Less food in, less waste,
simple as that. Drink a lot of fluids, as that can help. It will probably
never go away.

Dido! I'm sick this very moment from constipation. I take all sorts of
things to make me go and it doesn't work. Since RNY I can barely go and
it's just now becoming clear that it might always be this way. I drink lots
of water, take stool softners, do the fiber thing...yet no results. Good
luck to you and God Bless I truly now how it feels.

You would need to buy Fiber Choice with Calcium and you will get regulated,
you will no longer be constipated. The doctor recomended that to me as well
Good Luck!

You are not alone.
I take colace and 2 sugar free fiber choice chewable tablets every night,
and the next morning, things come out easily.
Both items are over the counter, at any drug store. I happen to get mine at
WalMart.

yes i was very regular before surgery, i'm talking twice a day no questions
asked. Now it's like once a week and i'm constipated then. I was just given
some advice to try a fiber drink like Fiberall. I plan to ask the dr when i
go in Thursday. Good luck, Lynda

I had lapband and it does not go away. Did not have it before surgery. I
have tried everything people have all ready mentioned and the only thing
that works for me is the Miralax as well. It is a miracle. Makes you
regular and it is tasteless as well. You can put it in food or drink. Just
once a day is all you take it and Wal-mart is the cheapest place to get it.
Good Luck.

Hi Brenda, you share a common problem with many wls patients. I am an RNY
patient, and I didn't know that banders had constipation issues, but there
is hope! I had GYN surgery after wls, and my GYN perscribed what you can
not get at a pharmacy as "Miralax". It is a white powder that
you mix with water or juice (I use juice). It is Tasteless, and does not
thicken up like metamucil. It works great. My only caution is that as an
RNY patient I use a half dose. A full dose is too big for my pouch. I
don't think that is an issue for banders. Because it should go right
through the band hold, you probably should take a full dose. It si NON
habitforming, so you can use it daily. My mother suffers from chronic
constipation and uses it every day, and I use it when I need to. It takes
about two days to work, but it works VERY well. It has no taste, and that
makes it so easy to take rather than a pill. Hope you give it a try. I
get "Gycolax" as a perscription, but you can get the Miralax at
any pharmacy or Wal Mart. It really works well. Take care. Patricia P.
