Question:
Any Regrets

Hi I am having a Lapband done November 9th and very excited, people ask me if I am scared even though there can be complications, and I am not. What are some positive experiences and does anyone have any regrets    — gabbyjane (posted on October 28, 2007)

Hi - Best of Luck to you! I am now 5 months out and down 40 lbs. It is not as easy as I thought it would be - but still worth it. It has taken all this time to get my head adjusted to the new eating regime. I still sometimes struggle with "head hunger" I have just decided that I need and want to lose weight worse than I want chocolate cake! Listen to your Doc's instructions, and walk, walk, walk as much as you can right after your surgery to get rid of the gas they use to pump up your stomach cavity - that is the most uncomfortable part. Also don't be discouraged if you follow the liquid diet and then don't lose any about three weeks out once you start eating - that's normal. Stick with it and it definitely works, however it is a tool, not a fix and it does still take will power and determination - good luck and be patient - fitting into smaller clothes and getting compliments is worth it!

November 9th will be a lucky day for you! It will be the beginning of a new life, that's the day exactly one year ago that I had RNY and I am amazed at the results! I am down 94 lbs and below by goal weight. I have a Normal BMI and wear size 6! My advice to you, follow the plan to the letter and start exercising immediately! You will be able to walk or do walking tapes like Walking off the Lbs right away and after about a month you can go to Curves or join exercise classes at the gym, slowly at first and then advance to harder things. Water aerobics is great too! The exercise has been my salvation and I have few loose skin issues. My sleep apnea is gone and my diabetes, although not gone, is under control. Best of luck..remember you do lose more slowly with lapband and you have to go for fills and you will have a permanent port on your body. I am sure you will do great and it's normal to be nervous!

I also want to wish you luck. It is an exciting journey that you are about to embark on. I am almost 8 months postop and am down 90 pounds. It has been a great experience for me and has taught me a lot about myself and the way I use food to deal with my emotions. The most exciting thing for me now is that I don't constantly sit around daydreaming about food. I never imagined that there would be a time in my life when so little would satisfy me, but it really has happened for me and will happen for you as well. My biggest regret is not having it done sooner. I know that is such a cliche answer, but it really is my only regret.

I'm glad you are not scared - you are taking steps to be a "healthier you" and to have a better life. Nothing to be afraid of! I am a band patient who is almost 5 years out. I weighed 240 the day of surgery and now weigh 130. I wear a size 4/6. I have an amazing life now - if anyone had told me 5 years ago what my life would be like now, I would have laughed in their face. I have a wonderful new partner who treats me like I am the best thing since sliced bread. I have been promoted twice at work (yes, twice since the weight loss). I simply enjoy life so much more than before - and I had a pretty good life then so this is really amazing! You will love your new life.

My only regret is that I waited so long to do it! I think your not being scared just shows how ready you are. Good luck!

Congrats and good luck on the 9th! I had RNY about 6 weeks ago and am down 32 lbs. I had some issues at first, but am doing better. I actually went into this process with the idea of getting the lapband. I didn't want to get something I thought was irreversible. I didn't realize the RNY can be reversed, which was good to know. I was also told the band does better on people who aren't snackers. The dietician said with the band you tend to only loose about 40-50% of your excess weight and the RNY you can potentially loose 70-80%. I know if varies from person to person, but I know myself and my will power is zilch! I decided on the RNY during my 6 mo supervised weightloss. Just know the pros and cons going into it and you will do great!!

No Regrets at all! I am living proof that the lap band is just as good as any surgery. I am 1 year out and down 150lbs. I wish I could have done it years ago too! Good luck on your amazing journey!

I have never had a moment of regret and I am 3 year out. My experience of course will be different than yours because I opted for the lap RNY. I really felt the need to fear 'dumping'. Best wishes for lovely journey on the other side.

Today makes a year! I have lost 120 lbs!! I haven't had any problems - I only missed 3 days of work when I had my surgery and everything has gone well since then! Just follow the doctors orders! I wished I would have had it sooner!
