Question:
I am 10 weeks post op and cannot tolerate any type of beef, chicken or pork.
I am getting 60 grams of protein via supplements without problem. Food that is bad for me like salty pretzels, crackers or chips stay down file. I can eat three or four bites of chicken the size of an erasser and be sick the rest of the day. My dr did an upper GI and says I'm in the window of misery. Anyone else having this problem? I've lost 37 lbs but have not lost for over three weeks. I am exercising 3 to 4 time a week. — Lisa Eason (posted on July 30, 2007)

I am almost 9 weeks post op. I am also having trouble keeping down food
period. I can not really eat any meat and when I eat I feel sick. I am
thinking liquids are better because at least I am not sick on them.

Hi Lisa, thanks for writing. It is not at all unusual for you to struggle
with solid proteins like meat. Many people in our support group didn't
begin to eat meats for several months, and beef for some was a year or
better. I don't know if you can drink milk or eat cottage cheese or eggs,
but these are great protein sources as well. As you look around, you will
find new and fun ways to get your protein in until you can tolerate meat
again. I eat all meats now, but it was not so easy when I first got
started. I still have no problems with the snacks and chips, they go down
just fine (isn't that amazing)? We have to work at a good diet, so keep
working at it. A real plateau is 12 weeks of no weight loss, so be
patient, it happens. I would step up the exercise to 5 or 6 days a week,
even if the other two were just walking a few blocks. I walked 2.5 miles
twice a day for a year, and still only lost about 1 to 2 pounds per week.
Our metabolism is a battlefield and you have to push it to train it to
change. I would also beef up the water and cut back on the snacky stuff.
It goes down better, but it doesn't help you take of the weight you want to
lose. The sodium can cause you to retain fluid, and you, and if you still
have your mensus, it could be contributing to that as well. You and I are
the same age, and I am starting menopause and have no uterus (surgery), but
if this is not the case with you, then fluid and mensus issues can cause
you to be at a standstill for a time. Be patient and keep doing the next
right thing. Beef up the exercise and water, cut back on the junk.
Patience will win you more poundage. By the way, next time you are in the
market, pick out 40 pounds of butter or sugar. Then jump up and down
because that is how much fat is NOT in your body anymore! Way to go girl!

Lisa -- I am the same way a little over 5 months post op and down 73 lbs.
I have no problem with junk food (crackers, pretzels, chips) and get almost
all of my protien from shakes. I will not even try chicken anymore.
Shrimp sits well and pork cooked in the crockpot with a lofat cream soup
because it is really moist. It does get better I can eat Taco Meat now so
give it time and it will work. Just remember to keep the meats moist and
chew chew chew I know my biggest problem was getting over the anexity of
eating.

Lisa, I had my surgery two days before you. For approximately the past
month I have thrown up just about everything except for yogurt, mashed and
baked potatoes, sf pudding, and crackers. I just had an appointment with
my surgeon 7/27 and he is worried that I might have a stricture, so on
Thursday 8/2 I am having a scope done to see if the opening to my pouch
needs dilated. He says it is something that he usually only has to do once
and it really can't be prevented. If that is the problem, then after this
procedure I should be able to eat more. Maybe this could be part of the
problem with you now being able to eat???? I hope things get better! I
know exactly how you feel because I am sick all the time too! It is
definetely not fun and makes you afraid to eat too. Good Luck! Mary

Carbs are your enemy and they are prohibiting your weight loss. Try
Wendy's chili, dinty moore beef stew, boston market dark meat chicken,
canned tuna and salmon with mayo. Chicken is a difficult food to digest
unless it is very very moist. My nut says it takes a year to eat normally.
I am just starting to be able to tolerate chicken breast and I'm almost 9
months out. I did well with shrimp, fish like tilapia and salmon.

Meat can be an issue early in the process. I suggest you try some flaky
fish - halibut, salmon, cod, etc. They tend to be easier for the stomach
to digest. Canned tuna and canned shredded chicken can often be tolerated
also.
Just keep drinking your protein shakes and you will be fine during the
adjustment period.
Good luck!
