I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but my surgeon put me on a liquid diet
for 10 days before by Banding surgery to "shrink" my liver. It's
kind of controversial, because some think the "liver shrinking"
thing is an excuse to make a potential patient stick to a liquid diet. I
don't have the answer to that, but I stuck pretty close to the diet and the
surgeon said that I had done well and my liver did not present a problem.
If nothing else, it's a question you can ask your surgeon. Good luck!

I had lap band surgery in 2000, and the Mexican surgeon who performed my
procedure said that I had a fatty liver (alot of obese people have fatty
livers), but he did the surgery laparoscopically and I didn't have any
problems stemming from that at all.

Yes having a fatty liver creates problems for the surgeon during the
operation. They all would like for you to lose a little weight prior to
surgery. They use a divise to move and hold the liver out of the way while
performing the operation, the more fatty it is the slippery it becomes. So
if you can lose a little weight or shrink it before surgery the operation
will go much faster and smoother. Good luck, and do what he says to do.

I had a fatty liver as well. I was banded 2-2-07. Because my BMI was over
45, they recommended that I do the liver shrinking diet. It was not the
liquid diet though. I was on a modified Adkins. I ate all the protein bars
that I wanted and of course gave up any and all carbinated drinks.(Be VERY
careful when purchasing protein bars as most are extremely high in carbs)
If I felt that I HAD to have some REAL food, then i could have a grilled ck
breast. I found that water was my new best friend. I also found Russel
Stover candy bars in the diet and diabetic section, they are low carb. Most
pks have under 1 1/2 grams of carbs per package. The most important thing
was to keep my carb consumption UNDER 40 grams of carbs per day. I lost 27
lbs in 2 weeks. The reason for the diet is that your liver is a fatty
tissue, it is not as protected as your other organs, and it bleeds VERY
easily. As part of the surgery, they have to manipulate your lliver to get
the band around the top of your stomach. They want you to do the diet, not
to be mean or make you get used to liquids, it is for your health and to
have the safest surgery possible. I took it as an opportunity to start my
new life 2 weeks before the surgery. There were days that were difficult,
but I just kept reminding myself of the final result. I had my first fill
on 3-15-07, and to date have lost 125 lbs. I personally have sent 3 family
members to my same surgeon, none of them had as high of BMI and decided not
to do the diet. Their recovery took longer, they were more sore, and had a
harder time after the surgery and before their first fills. If you have any
more ?'s or just want to chat, I'd be happy to talk. Please keep in contact
as I find that there are not as many bandsters and, I would like to help
and keep in touch with as many as possible and to have their support and
help as well. Good luck and remember life is beautiful. Even if it doesn't
look so great now!!! But going from a 28-28 to a 16 in just 5 months....I
can remember again how beautiful life can be....

I have a question re: Bonnie's response, why not taking carbonated drinks
with the modified Atkins? What does the carbonated drinks do? I know they
are not recommended after banding, but what about before? Sue Stenzel

Hi Ruth, thanks for writing. A fatty liver means that your liver is not
doing well. You can research it on webmd.com, but you should see your
doctor right away and work on treatment for this. A fatty liver can lead
to cancer, and cancer of the liver is very bad indeed. I don't know what
stage of fatty liver you have, but your doctor can do blood work, and if
necessary a biopsy and see what a real diagnosis is. Please DO NOT look
for a diagnosis here on line from peers, but seek a doctor and take your
health seriously. I don't know what you do to reverse a fatty liver. At
one point they thought my liver was "fatty", and I had surgery to
remove my gall bladder (not related), and they had to look over my liver,
when they did, they found it looked fine. A fatty liver can come from
being obese, but it can also come to lean people who eat poorly, so it is
not just limited to the obese. Please do research and get help for this.
The liver is a very vital organ. Take care. Patricia P.

My husband and I both have fatty livers - he did the liquid diet about 10
days prior to surgery, actually weaned himself onto liquids, he cut out two
meals, then down to liquid only - he lost 14 pounds and surgery was great.
The doctor said the liver was small enough to make the operation a bit
easier. I am doing the same, my surgery is next week. Also note that the
doctor did a surgery that day on a woman with a fatty liver and it went
well also. If you can do it, it's best to go liquid and shrink it for a
safer surgery.

I am having Lap band done at the end of August. My surgeon put his patients
on a Atkins type diet. He said the carbs make the liver larger so maybe
watch your carb in take prior to surgery
