Question:
Ins.co.
After you get approved by the Ins. co. how long does it take before you go pre op? Or do you have to wait for months? Donna Gubbins June 17th, 2007 — gubbinsy (posted on June 17, 2007)

I'm not sure if it's the same in every situation...but I believe once the
insurance approves the surgery it's up to you and your doctor how much
longer to wait. In my case the insurance approval was good for 3 months,
so had we waited more than 3 months we would have had to go through the
approval process again.
So....I would have to say, if you've been approved...Congratulations!!!
You're almost there!!!

Every insurance co and surgeon's office is different, but I can say that I
had my first consult on Jan 28th and sugery on Feb. 15th. There was a psych
eval and two other meetings in between - start to finish.

The group I used doesn't send anything into the insurance until all
pre-reqs are done and you get the final internist approval. Mine was sent
in on a Monday, and I was approved by Wednesday and had my surgery on
Thursday (the surgery date had been scheduled months in advance). I kept
asking them - aren't you concerned that I won't be approved at the last
minute? But everyone seemed very confident that I'd be approved since they
have so much experience working with insurances. I have Aetna.

Hi Donna. If you have approval, then your doctors office should contact
you to set a date. Each surgeon makes their own schedule and only do so
many each week, so it will depend on their own waiting list. When I was
awaiting approval from my Insurance company, I called them every 3 days
until I got approval, then I called my surgeon to announce my approval and
set my date. I knew before them, and I did wait for 2 days past the
approval, but when they didn't call me, I called them. They are busy
people, and sometimes you just need to step up and be pro active with your
own care. I did with mine, and I set the date, which was about 6 weeks
from the time I called, and it has been over 3 years now, but still no
regrets. It is hard work, but the best health decision for me. Take care,
I wish the same for you. Patricia P.

Donna,
I may have been quite lucky, but it took less than a month for me to have
surgery once my insurance company gave their approval.

When my insurance approve my surgery, my doctor was ready to schedule
surgery two or three weeks later. I waited two months because I need to
wait and get my sick and vacation time back. good luck.

Hi Donna, I have Cigna and had to go thru a 6 month diet. I finished my
last appt on December 1. Surgeon office submitted to insurance on December
4. I got approved and the phone call 2 days later on the 6th, pre-op on
the 7th and surgery on the 8th. My surgeons office said they had to fit me
in December or would have to resubmit to insurance--my surgeon was going
out of the country for the Xmas holidays so they rushed me on his calendar
so I wouldnt lose approval. I really wanted to have surgery by the end of
the year and they just told me that we have to wait on approval first and
they would get me in asap. I guess they will fit you in if necessary
because the very next week, the approval came. It was a very wild ride for
a couple of days as I went thru the motions very stunned that it happened
so fast. Even though I was planning it since May of 06. Good luck to you.
