Question:
Stomach ache/pain after eating, post-endoscopy
I was scoped a week ago and doc found a small ulcer ... prior to scope, I didn't have a lot of pain, just a little. But in the week since the scope, I have been getting a bad stomach ache and some nausea in my lower abdomen every time I eat. I am 5 months post-op. Can an endoscopy actually make symptoms worse?? Any ideas what this could be? — Kitcat (posted on March 19, 2006)

How are they treating your ulcer? The scope should not make it worse,
unless there was damage, but I think you'd know immediately if anything had
perforated. Marginal ulcers usually present as nausea before they start
acting painful. What happens if you eat smaller portions again, just a bit
smaller so they don't crow anything?

This is probably a better question for your doctor not the board. I did
have a scope a couple of years ago (I have very bad acid reflux) and it
gave me a sore throat for a day or two. They said it could. They have
shove the tube down and it can cause irritation. I did not have any other
side effects. I did read another womans post where the doctor punctured
her pouch during the procedure. If you really think there is a problem
there are lots of gastro docs out there, you could consult a second one.
Good luck!

Get a edo every year for my gerd, it has been benign for 12 years, but we
keep a very close watch on it. edo's dont hurt or do damage when the
doctor is skilled.

Lynn, I don't want to scare you, just want to present what happened to me.
I was having problems that required an endoscopy. I had the scope and was
to meet with my surgeon a week later to go over the results. I did not
feel different after the scope, however during my follow up appointment
with my surgeon he became irate, screamed, and was slamming stuff around as
he read the gastroenterologist report. I was scared, to be honest. He
apologized, but explained that the gastroenterologist who performed the
scope took it upon himself to work through the staples so that he could see
what was on the other side. Essentially, creating a SLD for me. Because
of this, the stomach acid in the 'old' stomach was pouring over into my
pouch which inturn severely irritated my newly found ulcer. (I was in pain
before and after the scope, just not new pain.) Now, since then I have had
3 more scopes over the years and all have been fine. But because of this
particular incident, my surgeon needed to repair what happened and removed
the ulcer at the same time. I am not transected, but now have 12 rows of
staples and some sutures.

Original poster here ... Thank you everyone for your posts! I My surgeon
did the scope herself and she is great so I doubt it was a doc's error. The
prescription post-scope is for Carafate. I'm hoping to feel better soon. -
