Question:
I'm 3 months post op (lap band) and have only lost 30 pounds.

It's been 3 months and I've only lost 30 pounds. I drink plenty of water, I can't eat in the mornings but can eat in the evenings sometimes. I'm much more active than I used to be. What am I doing wrong. Should I completely quit eating. I'm worried the surgery is a failure. I'm 5'2 and my starting weight was 250, I'm now at 230 after 3 months.    — stacy3862 (posted on January 18, 2006)

Stacy- have you ever heard of starvation mode? Look girl i spent 40 years unable to eat in the mornings, and that was the biggest mistake I ever made, and contributed 100% to my weight gain. You are going to have to bite the bullet, and eat ALL of your required foods. Breakfast is one of them, and that is a sure bet from every surgeon. you are not getting in the correct foods, and forget the water, if you arent getting in enough protein ( the number of grams necessary to reach goal weight) no matter if you had the surgery or not, in order for it to work for you, you have to work twenty times harder for your pouch than you ever thought possible. 30 lbs is always nice to lose, buy I would guess you feel " I had the surgery, it will automatically come off": WRONG! Its time to hunker down and get busy and concentrate on doing what is necessary to make the tool work for you. Maybe some counselingl- but definitely a trip to your surgeon and another one to your nutritionist. If you do not have a nutritionist- find one in your area with WLS backround. If you cannot do either, then email me, and i will make sure you are on the right path. I usually do not do this,, but desprate reasons call for desprate measures. We are here to help, and that is what i am suggesting. something is not working and i believe it is you, taking the surgeryi for granted. Please, I am not flaming you, many post ops fall into the same hole- but the bottom line is, you have to work Hard, Hard, Hard to make it work for you and that includes eating the right number of meals a day, drink the right number ounces of water a day, and get in the right number of protein grams a day. It also means, don't play with foods you know you shouldnt be eating, because as you are finding out, it doesnt work that way. ( you didnt mention what u are eating - how much, how many protein grams, water intake or whether you are cheating and trying those trigger foods from pre-op) Good luck and let me know if I can help you Cindi -217 P.S. I am still weighing and measuring all my foodsi i refuse to fail

30 pounds in 3 months is normal weight loss. The band does NOT promote rapid weight loss. 30 pounds sounds like your doing what you are suppose to.

Stacy I think you are looking at this all wrong--30 lbs in 3 months is AWESOME! That is 10 lbs a month, more than the average 1-2 lbs bandsters are expected to lose a week. You are right on track! I am confused as to why you think you are doing something wrong--you had the band, not the bypass right? Besides the first few months are for healing anyway, not weight loss. It usually takes a few fills before people start dropping consistently. Think about it like this: If you were to continue at this rate, (which I wouldn't necessarily expect-you are losing fast!) by christmas you will weigh around 110lbs--does that sound like failure to you??? good luck and keep doing what you are doing!

I'm not a band patient, so I cannot answer for what is considered "normal' for ya'll. But I can point out something that my husband told me when I asked him a very similar question. That's 10 pounds a month. At the rate you are going, you will have lost 120 pounds in a year. That is an astonishing weight loss!

30 lbs!!!! Relax you are doing great. Everyone loses at a different rate and I bet if you bost you protien you may see even better results. Besides you do ot want to lose to fast- that can get you into serious trouble. I lost 20 lbs a month for the first 3 months due to malnutiriton and ended up in the hospital nearly dead. It took lots of help to slow thing down and then get me back on a moderate loss plan. If you keep that pace your energy will be great and you can exersize and live life. You are doing great!!!!!! Hang in there!

Do not quite eating my doctor told me that I had to eat 4 times a day to loose at a good rate the less times you eat the longer it takes to loose.

You are losing at a safe and even rate and that is the best thing for your body. You are less likely to have to deal with the side effects of rapid weight loss like myself and others deal with. I am not a lap-band patient, but I do know weight loss with the band is at a slower rate. have you asked your doc about another fill for it? You have to learn to eat 3 small meals through the day. Not eating in the morning is one of the worst things. You need to start your metabolism for the day even if it is with a piece of fruit of a small egg. Think about the positive things so far and build upon that. hang in the there and be patient.

Hi Stacy, A loss of 30 pounds after 3 months is great! The surgery is not a failure. Just follow your surgeons eating and protein recommendations and you will lose the weight. Don't quit eating because this will slow your weight loss. My surgeon recommends eating 6 small meals per day and at least 60 grams of protein along with vitamins and 64 ounces of water daily. Although I had GBP I believe some of the same recommendations apply to those who have had the lapband. Also consult with your surgeon about maybe loosing your band if you feel you cannot eat. Take care Prycey Lady RNY 2/2/05 373/236/??

I am also 5'2" (almost) and not a morning eater, either. I was overjoyed to see that they did a study at some medical university, and they found that "night people" actually gained wweight if they ate breakfast! I always did! In the dawn of the world, all the morning people got up and arranged everything. By the time we night people got up, it was done. Try eating after you have been up for awhile. At theree month,s I was still getting sick from eating, too. It should pass. ARe you getting your protein and vitamins? Are you exercising? Everyone is different. I am losing more slowly than many others, too.

Can you list what your daily regimen is like? How much water, how do you eat your meals, slow fast? how much of what? How often? What is your vitamin and protein regimen like, products and timing? Maybe we can see a flaw in your plan?
