Question:
I Had My First Consultation On 4-18-03, The Doctor Was Discouraging
Until He Found Out That I Have Significant Comorbidities Because My BMI Was 35.1. I Told Him That I Had Lost A Few Pounds Because Of The Ritalin That My PCP Put Me On And He Said That Was Probably Why And Ask Me What Was The Most I Ever Weighed. Of Course I Told Him. Has Anyone Been Denied With Comorbidities And A Low BMI Of 35? — CINDY D. (posted on April 21, 2003)

I was denied by Kaiser. My BMI was 45.1 and I only had one comorbiditiy
(high blood pressure). I had to file a grievance, and was denied again. I
then had to file with the Calif Dept of Managed Health Care. I was then
approved because they go by the National Institute of Health standards,
which I met. So, it depends on your health plan. Your BMI is quite low to
consider the surgery.
