Question:
How is it possible to be able to eat 12 oz at 10 months post op?
I am able to eat this mount at one time, but want to know how when my pouch was only 2 oz to begin with? And does this mean I need a revision? — STEPHANIE N. (posted on April 17, 2002)

My surgeon told us at a support group meeting the other night that the
mature pouch will stretch at least 4 times what it was originally--I know I
read somewhere that for most RNY surgeries, the mature pouch is between 8
and 12 ounces. I'm not having a traditional RNY--I'm having a Fobi-type
procedure--and my surgeon makes his pouches 1 oz. with the hope (he said)
that they will stretch up to 4 oz. But from what I've read about the RNY,
it sounds to me like your pouch is doing exactly what it's supposed to.
But you should ask your doctor if this is normal for HIS pouches.

I agree withthe previous poster. Although my numbers a slightly different
- I read the mature puch is 9-10 oz - I would imagine if my fairly new
pouch is 2 oz, and I can eat up to 4 oz at a time, then it's not that
strange that with a mature pouch you can eat up to 12 oz.

I've been able to eat 10 oz in one sitting. It scared me but it was mostly
soft. I'm still losing so I'm not worried about it. The key is, are you
continuing to eat it because it's sitting in front of you or because you're
still hungry? Try portioning out only 1/2 of that at a time and going to
another room to eat then making yourself wait before going back for
seconds. You'd be surprised at how your mind tells you you're full. Good
luck and God Bless!

I agree with the previous posters. Over time, the pouch naturally
stretches. That's why, as times goes by, some people regain weight if
they aren't careful about "what" they eat. I speak from
personal
experience on that....I regained 20lbs. and I spent the entire winter
losing it.
I can hold about 12 oz. and that freaked me out...until...I compared what
I can eat now to what I could eat before my rny. 12 oz. is nothing! (lol)
Check with your doctor; but, I think you are right on target.

Oh, that mysterious pouch!! I am 9 months out and find when I eat dense
protein (meat), I can still only eat a few ounces and I'm full. When I eat
other things, though (like crackers, rice cakes, some salads, etc.) I can
eat significantly more. It has taken some doing to retrain myself to eat
my salad (if I can fit any) AFTER my protein. I still like the salad first
- but am changing to better suit my tool. Try letting your pouch get
empty, then see how much chicken or turkey you can eat (or I've read here
about cottage cheese)...that should tell you how much food your pouch
really wants at one time. AND, if you're still losing...that's a good
thing! Best to you. OPEN RNY 7/17/01, -90, 47 to go.
