Question:
Any input on your experience with Dr. Daniel Herron-NY City?
I am awaiting my consultation appointment with Dr. Daniel Herron in New York City. Can someone that has used Dr. Herron for there RNY (preferably laporascopic) please give me feedback on their experience with this doctor? I would appreciate any and all details on how the pre, during and post surgery went. I want to be sure that I am choosing the right doctor for this life-altering surgery. Thank you in advance! — Becca V. (posted on May 8, 2001)

I had Lap RNY with Dr Herron on August 21, 2000. I went in for my consult
on July 14, 2000. The consult was very good. He explained everything in
great detail and did a quick exam. He didn't ask me if I used drugs in
front of my mother (I thought that was pretty funny). He explained all the
risks involved and drew pictures. Next time I saw him was when I was
wheeled into the OR on surgery day. That's when I signed my consent. Next
time I saw him, I was in my room recuperating and he told me everything
went well. He came in everyday I was there and released me on the fourth
day. I saw him again at 3 weeks, 3 months and 6 months post op. Each time
he listened to my concerns and answered any questions. I like that I can
email him anytime. He usually answers quickly. I think Dr Herron, though
young, is an excellent doctor. My surgery went very well, no complications
and excellent recuperation. If you have any further questions, please
email me.

Jeanne pretty much summed up my experience with Dr. Herron also. Except the
drugs part - my mother wasn't there so he didn't have to wait to ask that
question. He is very easy going and likeable. As for his surgical
ability, I can only add that mine (lap RNY) went well and I had no
complications. Have spoken with others who went to him, and never heard a
bad word.

I have had a great experience with Dr. Herron. I was scheduled for a LAP
RNY but a week after we met he felt it was medically safer for me to have
BPD/DS. He answered all my e-mails altho sometimes they went unanswered for
a few days. I can tell you those answers were answers that could wait. Any
question that required immediate response I actually called and asked. All
my phone calls were returned promptly. I met Dr. Herron outside the OR and
again he reviewed everything. Then, he went and spoke with my husband while
the anesthesioilogist was prepping me. Dr. Herron was there in recovery
when I awoke and everyday he was on duty in the hospital. I was in 5
days, saw him 3. He also advised me who the on call Dr. would be over the
weekend,. I became sick and called the on call a week after I was home. I
was better the next day so I didn't call Herron's office. He called me the
next day as he heard I was sick. My follow up so far has been good and he
has listened to my requests/concerns. My incision is pencil thin and I feel
great for having an open procedure. 3 weeks after surgery I was camping
with my family. Other than feeling tired this is the greatest thing I have
done for myself. I have had a great experience with Dr. Herron and I would
do it over again in a heartbeat. I'm 1 month post op and down 30 lbs! I
will tell you that with any Dr. you need to ask questions and be very
proactive in this. It's your surgery. What ever questions you have for Dr.
Herron you need to ask,you need to follow thru. He is a busy man,not just a
Bariatric surgeon but also does Kidney transplants. That's one reason I was
never upset if he didn't get back to me right away. If you have something
that can't wait then you call-don't go via e-mail.

I can honestly say, there was absolutely nothing pulling me to use this
doctor. I feel the office is like a factory and the only procedure he
pushed is lap. I did homework on gastric bypass for 2 years before I did
this surgery. Many Many people steered me away from Mt.Sinia hospital as
well as Dr. Heron. I had RouxEnY open in Jan of this year and I was
thrilled with my surgeon. His name is Dr. MARC BESSLER
212-305-9506 ask for Maria. He is very very professional. NOT THE FREINDLY
type but the very best there is. HE is the top doctor today in the country
for these procedures. His office is affiliated with both NY Cornell and
Columbia. You have the choice which to use. I can tell you that I did not
have one moments regret. Everything went picture perfect. I have
recommended him to 3 freinds all who have had surgery and can;t thank me
enough.
Good Luck e mail me with any questions i will be happy to help you.

I had my surgery in December of 2001 with Dr. Herron he is the greatist.
He treats you like a person, and a very good bedside manner. After my
surgery in the hospital he was checking up on me all the time. He reasured
me many times in my progress to get the surgery. He is the best one i've
seen. I saw on other one in Westchester medical center and I didn't like
them at all if your insurance doe's not pay them what they want they won't
do it. So I went Dr.s Herron and so glad I did. What a world of difference.
You will all love him.

I had lap RNY with Dr. Herron on Aug 14, 2000. I can tell you from my
experience that Dr. Herron is an excellent surgeon. He has gone above and
beyond with his care for me both pre-op and post-op. He has always been
quite accessible to me anytime I needed to ask a question. In fact I had
to be hospitalized in Jan (not due to the surgery), and went to his office
with my symptoms, and he and his staff could not have been kinder or more
helpful. He visited me in the hospital and called me several times, even
though the problem was unrelated to the surgery. He is a superior surgeon
and a super nice guy. I cannot say enough wonderful things about him.
Pleas feel free to email me privately if you have any futher questions.

I had BPD-DS with Dr. Herron April 10, 2001. I live in Atlanta and I
elected to travel to NY because the one surgeon in Atlanta, Dr. Smith, that
does the lap BPD-DS was scheduling 5-6 months out. Also, I hear is a great
surgeon, I found him impossible to get in touch with and didn't feel like
he ever was overly concerned with answering my questions. When I met with
Dr. Herron I found him to be very responsive. I had complications in the
OR. I was in surgery for 9 hours. My pancreas was adhered to my
gallbladder. Rather than rush me through surgery Dr. Herron meticulously
worked through it. I am very glad I didn't go to another surgeon. Everyone
has different experiences so I wish you well in finding a surgeon.
