Question:
Why does food hurt so much going down?
I am post op 2 wks lap roux en y and I just started on soft foods today. I have eaten broiled fish ,green beans, and a piece of toast, and it hurt so much going down,I thought I would pass out!! I thought I chewed well and ate slowly- will this pain eventually go away? It makes me want to go back to yogurt and mashed potatoes again!!!! Help!!!! — [Anonymous] (posted on September 5, 2000)

Yes, It will go away. It took me about 4 months to not feel pain when I
ate. It was the worst feeling ever! I was on 3 wks of liquids before I
could go to mush 1 wk then soft 1 wk then normal foods. I stayed with soft
a bit longer due to the pain, you might want to do the soft foods for a bit
longer. GOOD LUCK!! It does get better!

I haven't experienced that type of pain, but I am not allowed solid food
until 6 weeks post-op, 3 weeks to go

Hi, I'm almost 4 1/2 months past my surgery date and I was just thinking
the other day that I didn't notice when food stopped "hurting" in
my pouch or making me feel mildly nauseated. It must have stopped some
time in the last month, but I didn't notice. But for a while there, food
did feel extremely uncomfortable when it entered the pouch and to the point
that it made me not want to eat. Hope this helps!

At two weeks post op I was still on liquids, eggwhites, yogurt and cottage
cheese...and it hurt if I ate too quickly.

You should call your surgeon just to make sure everything is okay. I never
had any pain with food going down (I also had RNY). Your opening could be
too small or something.

Just my thoughts, I'd stay away from bread right now. It
fills pouch quickly and then seems to "grow" after it's
there. My doc advanced diet quicker than most here too
(regular foods by 3 weeks post op except beef, white breads
and pork). Eat slowly, real slow. I don't eat alot of bread
now. One piece of toast, or 1/2 biscuit, 1/2 sandwich. We
really need the protein more. I still can't tolerate a fast
food regular burger. Can you imagine, I used to order the
double cheeseburger, fries and supersize. I can eat about 1/2
of a regular cheeseburger.I don't do that often because it
bothers me. Take it slow. I'm almost 8 months out (open RNY)
down 89 pounds, about 5-10 pounds from goal.
Email me anytime. Lou Ann

I am 5 months post op RNY. I have severe pain when I eat if I am upset.
Also, if I eat too fast. And I do mean severe! Sometimes it passes in a
couple of minutes - sometimes it takes more like 20 minutes. Make sure you
relax, stop eating immediately if you get pain and wait it out. Do not
drink at all after you've taken a bite or two. This also causes major pain
for me! If I try to drink with my food -- my meal is over!!!!
