Question:
gastric bypass and lapband are they the same with insurance

My insurance covers both but I am a lower bmi. My doctor says that if I approved for one than the other would be approved as well. My question is I was denied months ago for lap band but now have co morb. I am going to appeal for gastric bypass will that make a difference. THANKS    — araynard29 (posted on January 14, 2010)

My surgeon encouraged me to call my insurance company directly to sort out issues like this. Different companies have different rules, and they may even be published on their website. I was able to look up the weight loss policy on my insurance company's website and see just what they require. For my company, the requirements are different for lap-band and RNY and DS.

Luckily my insurance company would pay for either one. My case manager's advise was to work with my surgeon to decide which surgery would be best for me.
