Question:
6 weeks post op lap band; down 37 lbs'; plateau already?

Hello all, I had l/b surgery 6 weeks ago and have since lost 37 pounds but haven't lost anything in about the last week??? Does this make sense? I'm on stage 4 at this point and have been sticking to what the dr's are telling me I should be eating and haven't cheated once, however, I'm wondering if I'm at a plateau already? I've been walking everyday and have been doing everything they're telling me to do so I'm not sure if it's too soon to be at a plateau. I'm not discounting the fact that I've lost 37 - I'm psyched about that but am bummed that it's been about a week since I've seen any additional loss. I've gone back to basics and have been writing down everything I'm eating, exercising etc and will bring it next week when I meet with my NUT but was just curious to see if other people had a similar experience. Thank you!    — Lisa B. (posted on October 22, 2009)

Try not to worry. Your body will periodically go through a plateau so it can get used to all of the changes it's experiencing due to your weight loss. Sometimes, you replace fat with muscle. Since muscle weighs more than fat, it won't seem like you're loosing anything, but you're probably losing inches. Also, adding muscle causes your body to burn more calories, even when you're resting. Everyone will lose weight at a different rate, and you can expect your weight loss to change over time. For the first 6 months, I only weighed myself at my appointment with my surgeon (I had a fill about once a month). I also measured myself once a month, and took photos from the same chair and in standing every month. You'll enjoy looking at these pictures later. Also, try to keep at least one pair of your pants from right before you had surgery. When I reached my goal weight, I could actually fit my whole body into just one leg of my old jeans. I lost about 1 dress size every month or so for the first 6 months, then the weight loss started to slow down. The closer I got to my goal weight, the slower the weight came off. I had plateaus and even gained weight a few times. I just got back to the basics, and kept trying. After about 3 and 1/2 years, I had reached my goal weight. I am now 5 years post-op. I've been able to keep my weight stable by just sticking with the good eating habits I learned during the first year. I hope that helps. I wish you the best on your exciting journey toward good health. God Bless.
